Stockum is a northern district of Düsseldorf and belongs to the city district 5 . With an area of 5.74 km², Stockum is one of the large districts, but has only around 5600 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2016). The residential development is predominantly concentrated in the eastern area of the district, while the western part is mainly characterized by the exhibition grounds , the MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA as well as the exhibition car parks and Rhine meadows. Due to the proximity to the airport, there are no high buildings other than the exhibition towers. One and two-family houses and smaller residential complexes are predominant. In the south is the north park with the Aquazoo .

Stockum is one of the richest districts in Düsseldorf. The average annual income here is 60,697 euros (as of December 31, 2007).

location

The border to Lohausen in the north forms the A 44 , to Unterrath the streets Am Roten Haus and Deikerstraße in the east, in the south to Golzheim the Grünewaldstraße and Erich-Klausener-Straße and in the west the Rhine , on the opposite side of the Meerbusch district Ilverich lies.

Description of the district

Living close to the trade fair

Around the Freiligrathplatz are the upscale residential areas of Stockum, which are predominantly built with one and two-family houses. Noteworthy is the flower settlement , a model settlement built under the National Socialists as part of the Reich Exhibition of the Creative People .

In addition, Stockum is characterized by numerous institutions. The Düsseldorf trade fair is located in Stockum. The new exhibition center opened in 1971 with its (2007) 19 halls with 264,000 m² and around 308,000 m² of exhibition space, together with the parking lots, takes up large areas of the district. In 2007, a total of 1.5 million visitors visited the approximately 27,704 exhibitors. The Düsseldorf city hall is also located on the exhibition grounds. Right next to the fair is the Nordpark and in this the Aquazoo. The Japanese garden is right next to the trade fair congress center . The MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA multifunctional hall is located north of the trade fair and is directly connected to the trade fair grounds via a hotel. Next to it are the Arena Sports Park , the public Rheinbad with indoor and outdoor pools and huge parking spaces. The Düsseldorf Fashion House is located on Danziger Strasse , a supraregional fashion center with over 200 suppliers on 48,000 m². The fashion house will be demolished in the future. This is where the "Deiker Höfe" will be built, a modern, new urban quarter with around 400 apartments, offices, retail outlets, restaurants and hotels.

The airport is located in neighboring Lohausen, but is mainly approached via the Stockum area.

Settlements from the late Bronze Age are known. A larger Germanic settlement dates from the later Roman Empire (approx. 160–260 AD). A large cemetery with around 100 burials dates from around AD 600 to 740; the associated settlement should have had about 35 inhabitants. The first reliable mention in the written sources for the years 1090/1120 is in a listing of the income of the Kaiserswerth monastery . A mention of the year 1003, when Archbishop Heribert acquires other goods in Stochheim / Stochem , refers to the place Stockum near Voerde .

In a deed from 1193, the Stockum districts were listed alongside Flingern and Derendorf. With this document, the monastery Kaiserswerth was confirmed the forest counties for the cited districts. In a document from 1368 a court in the Honschaft Stockum was mentioned, which belonged to the benefices of the Düsseldorf collegiate church. This court was relieved of all “public burdens” for holding the “memorial celebration” of the count family with their ancestors. The certificate was issued to Countess Margarete and her son, Count Wilhelm von Berg . In 1393 the collegiate church of Duke Wilhelm II was given the two additional courtyards Hainrode and Kirchholtes (or called Holthausen) for the memorial celebration. The latter farm was in the Stockum area.

For 1634 there were five vacant farms in the Stockum Honors, of which the Holthausen farm belonged to the Kreutzherren as benefices; one farm was named "Schnellenbergh". Until modern times, Stockum consisted of individual farms. The Stockumers were probably assigned to the Church of Holthausen; its own chapel in Stockum was only built in 1752 after the Holthausen church was demolished in 1691 because of dilapidation. In 1877 the imperial parade of the imperial maneuver took place in Stockum .

The place was incorporated into Düsseldorf in 1909. At that time it was still characterized by rural and agricultural areas. At the time of incorporation, 807 inhabitants lived in an area of 3.72 km², but that also included larger parts of the rural community of Lohausen. The place consisted of several farms with a small medieval chapel. The old buildings fell victim to the exhibition grounds. An old street led here at today's Schnellenburg bar across the Rhine, which connected Kaiserswerth and Neuss . The Schnellenburg was mentioned in a document as early as 1411. In 1913 the city of Düsseldorf bought the old ferry and towing station and planned a new industrial port here. In 1925 the buildings were demolished, but because of widespread protests in 1925 and 1926 they were rebuilt by Freese City Planning Council. Long before 1900, the Carl Jäger company in Barmen , later part of Bayer AG , operated an aniline dyes and chemical factory for a while (Stockumer Höfe 22/25); Furthermore, clay was mined for the production of bricks. The remnants of these trades fell victim to the construction of the north park.

traffic

Stockum is exposed to high traffic loads due to the facilities in the district and its immediate location at the airport. In the inner city, Stockum is connected via Kaiserswerther Strasse and the Danziger Strasse expressway ( B 8 ). There are two junctions to the A 44 in the north . The airport terminal in neighboring Lohausen is about a kilometer away. The district is connected to local public transport via the U78 and U79 trams and several bus routes.

Remarks

  1. In the reviews of old documents by E. Wisplinghoff 1972, the places "Mehrum, Stocheim and Götterswick" are listed. These are all three near Voerde / Niederrhein, so that Stockum was definitely not mentioned in Düsseldorf. (In.
