The WWE Divas Championship was next to the WWE Women's Championship the most important women's title of the wrestling organization WWE and was only awarded to the Divas Division. The title was introduced as the second women's title in 2008 and discontinued at Wrestlemania 32 on April 3, 2016. As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .
Because the SmackDown roster did not have its own wrestling title for its Divas division, the WWE introduced the WWE Divas Championship . The then SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero announced the creation of the new wrestling title in the SmackDown issue of June 6, 2008. The title belt was officially unveiled that same evening. Michelle McCool and Natalya earned their participation in the title match at the Great American Bash by beating other divas . Michelle McCool eventually defeated Natalya to become the first title holder. Maryse won the title of McCool in December 2008. Although one week at a house show injured, Maryse had the title until their return in January 2009 held. As part of the 2009 draft , Maryse switched to Raw and from then on the title was only available for Divas of the Raw rooster. The August 30th edition of Raw announced that the Divas Championship and the Women's Championship would be combined in a night of champions match between Michelle McCool and Melina . As a result, the title was defended at both WWE brands ( Raw and SmackDown ). On April 3, 2016 at WrestleMania 32 , the title was discontinued and replaced by the successor to the Women's Championship , the Divas Championship .
WWE declared the title vacant after Melina tore a cruciate ligament during a house show on December 29, 2009 and was injured for several months as a result.
This was a Title Unification Lumberjill Match on Night of Champions. This combined the WWE Women's Championship and WWE Divas Championship. Layla considered herself a co-champion, but this is not recognized by the WWE.
