Dunajov (Hungarian Dunajó ) is a municipality in the north-center of Slovakia with 1158 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Čadca , part of the Žilinský kraj .

geography

The community is located in the valley of the Kysuca on its right bank below the Javorník Mountains . The center of the village is at an altitude of 373  m nm and is 14 kilometers from Čadca .

Neighboring communities are Krásno nad Kysucou , Kysucký Lieskovec , Ochodnica and Zákopčie .

history

The place arose in the 16th century on the territory of the Budatín estate and was mentioned in 1598 as Dunajow . Like many other places in the Kysuce region , it was settled by Wallachian colonization. In 1784 there were 73 houses and 417 inhabitants, in 1828 90 houses and 643 inhabitants. Due to the lack of fertile soils, several crafts were developed, especially wire binding, other residents emigrated.

During the Second World War, nine residents were shot by a force of the German Wehrmacht.

population

According to the 2011 census, 1149 inhabitants lived in Dunajov, including 1100 Slovaks, six Czechs, two Ukrainians, one Moravian and one other ethnic group. 39 residents did not provide any information. 1045 inhabitants professed to the Roman Catholic Church, 12 inhabitants to the Christian community (an Evangelical church), one resident each to the Jewish religion and Orthodox Church and one resident was of a different denomination. 35 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 54 inhabitants has not been determined.

Infrastructure

The basic infrastructure is partially developed: there are water and gas pipes and connections to the cable television network; there is no sewer system or connection to a sewage treatment plant. There is a kindergarten and a primary school (up to fourth grade) in the village, and there is a post office and library. The Žilina – Bohumín railway runs through the village and there is a stop. The 1st order road 11 (E 75) leads on the left bank of the Kysuca, with a connection in Krásno nad Kysucou.
