The 1988 EBSA European Snooker Championship was the first edition of a European continental championship for amateurs. It was organized by the European Billiards and Snooker Association and took place in May 1988 in the Circustheater in the Dutch city of Scheveningen .

The Dutch born Englishman Stefan Mazrocis became the first European champion. He won the final against Paul Mifsud from Malta 11: 7.

After the first attempt, however, the European Championship had not yet prevailed. It was not until 1993 that the next European Championship was held and the tournament was established as a permanent establishment.

mode

26 players from 12 countries took part in the first European championship. They were divided into four groups of 6 and 7 players respectively. In the “ everyone against everyone ” mode, two winners were played in each group and they made it to the quarter-finals. All games of the group round were played on 5 winning frames .

Final round

From the quarter-finals, the tournament winner was determined in the knockout system . The number of winning frames increased from round to round. It was the only time that the European champion was determined in a best-of-21 final, later the finals were best-of-15 and best-of-13.

Favorite in the final was the Maltese Paul Mifsud , who had already played as a professional for two years and was two-time amateur world champion . However, at the age of 41 he was at the top end of the field, while Stefan Mazrocis was one of the youngest players in the European Championship at the age of 21. The year before, he had also stood in the final and lost at the U21 World Cup , which was also held for the first time . The youth prevailed against the experience in the end with 11: 7. However, it was not until 1991 that Mazrocis could also take part in the professional tour.
