European Cup Winners' Cup 1965/66

The 1966/67 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the seventh edition of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 32 club teams from 31 countries took part, including Borussia Dortmund as defending champion, 28 reigning cup winners and three defeated cup finalists ( Servette Geneva , SK Rapid Vienna and Tatran Prešov ).

The DFB Cup winners FC Bayern Munich from Germany and the FDGB Cup winners BSG Chemie Leipzig from the GDR also took part in the competition.

FC Bayern Munich and the Glasgow Rangers contested the final in the municipal stadium in Nuremberg on May 31, 1967. Bayern won the game 1-0 after extra time with a goal from Franz Roth . It was her first European title. With Bayern's entry into the finals, the cup winners of an association were able to reach the final for the first time in three consecutive seasons, and with Bayern’s victory, the cup winners of an association won the title for the first time in two consecutive seasons.

The top scorer was Roger Claessen of Standard Liège with ten goals.

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was the same, a lottery procedure took place for the first time , as a penalty shoot-out was not yet planned. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, a replay would have been scheduled as no penalty shoot-out was planned for the final either.

Preliminary round

Since defending champion Borussia Dortmund was set for the second round, the field of participants had to be reduced by one team to 30 for the first round.

The first leg took place on August 22, the second leg on August 31, 1966.
