Evansville [ ˈɛv ə nsvɪl ] is a city in Indiana in the United States . The population was 119,477 (2010 census); with suburbs the population is 315,948. Evansville is the third largest city in Indiana, behind Indianapolis and Fort Wayne . It is the capital of Vanderburgh County .
The city is located on the north bank of the Ohio River , which forms the southern border of the state of Indiana. Evansville is a regional transportation hub, largely because of its proximity to the states of Kentucky and Illinois .
Evansville was founded in 1817 and soon became a commercial center because of its port on the Ohio River. In 1932 the first bridge was built over the Ohio River, which connects Evansville with Henderson in Kentucky. Today Evansville is the cultural and economic center of southern Indiana.
Sights in Evansville include Casino Aztar (a boat with a casino on board), Fall Festival (second largest street festival in the US), and the local Mesker Park Zoo.
Evansville is the seat of the Diocese of Evansville .
