European immigrants explored the course of the Kennebec River very early on. The area was part of the charter, the 1620 of Plymouth Company as land-grant by King James I was given. Through the Plymouth Company, William Bradford came to areas along the Kennebec River in 1629, including Farmingdale. Later these areas were divided into individual parcels by a subsequent company. On April 3, 1852, Farmingdale was organized as a town. Farmingdale's first industry was the mining and trading of ice.
