The Feengrotten-Kyffhäuser-Weg is an approx. 230 km long long- distance hiking trail in central Germany . It begins at the fairy grottoes in Saalfeld , follows the central Saale valley to the mouth of the Unstrut near Naumburg and from there to the Kyffhäuser monument in the low mountain range of the same name near Bad Frankenhausen .
The course of the entire route is marked by a blue bar on a white field ( ).
The path runs mainly through a cultural landscape with beautiful views of the Saale and Unstrut and cuts a number of larger towns. Longer sections of the path follow well-developed, partly asphalted cycle paths with the corresponding advantages and disadvantages for hikers.
course
The Feengrotten-Kyffhäuser-Weg begins at the Feengrotten in Saalfeld . From there it leads through the Saalfeld city center over the market square down to the Saale. Along this he follows a cycle path to the village of Remschütz . Shortly after leaving the village, it branches off into the Melktal and leads steeply up to the Kulm . From there it runs via Oberpreilipp back down to the Saale and along this to Rudolstadt and up to the Heidecksburg .
Here it leaves the Saale for a long time and leads in a wide arc over Teichweiden , Großkochberg and the Luisenturm up to Hohe Straße and along this down to Orlamünde . Here it crosses the Saale and leads in another arch over Freienorla , along the sandy path , towards Hummelshain . Halfway there, it branches off to the left, crosses the Drehbachgrund and leads back towards the Saale, which it crosses again at Großeutersdorf . From here it goes via Kahla up to the Leuchtenburg .

At the Leuchtenburg, the path leaves the Saale for the time being and leads over Seitenroda , Seitenbrück and Unterbodnitz to Magersdorf . From here it follows the Scheibental to Rothenstein , where it meets the Saale again and follows its right bank to Jena-Lobeda . After crossing under the A4 and crossing Lobeda, it leads up to the ruins of the Lobdeburg . From here it leads in a large arc to the summer linden tree and from there in another arc over Burgrabis to the Fuchsturm .
From the Fuchsturm it goes down to Jena-Ost and straight back up to the Jenzighaus . At the top it then goes in a wide arc around the valley of Laasan to the ruins of Kunitzburg . This is where the descent to Golmsdorf begins , which is followed immediately by another ascent to the Hohe Lehde . After circling the Paterskappe , it goes back down to Dorndorf-Steudnitz and after crossing the Saale again up to Dornburg to the Dornburg castles .
From Dornburg it goes via Hirschroda to Camburg . From here the path follows the Saale cycle path for long stretches . First it goes from Camburg to Kaatschen along the left bank of the Saale. After crossing the Saale, the path turns right and leads via Rödigen to the ruins of Saaleck and Rudelsburg . From here it goes, following the cycle path again, to Bad Kösen , back to the left side of the hall and along vineyards in a large curve towards Roßbach .
On the way from Roßbach to Kleinjena , the route passes the Unstrut estuary into the Saale and crosses the Unstrut for the first time between Kleinjena and Großjena . From here it goes, now along the Unstrut cycle path to Freyburg and up to the Neuchâtel .
Now it goes along the Unstrut to Zscheiplitz . Passing an old monastery, it goes in several loops through an old limestone quarry and around the Schafberg down to Weischütz . Again along the Unstrut cycle path, the path leads to Laucha and via another Dorndorf to Burgscheidungen . Here he leaves the cycle path, crosses the Unstrut and leads past Tröbsdorf over the fields to Nebra .
From Nebra it goes along the left bank of the Unstrut to Wangen . Here the path turns into the Schwalbestal and leads up to Wippach and the height on the Bockberg . Now it goes on the ridge along the forest and finally back down to Memleben . At the old monastery of Memleben the Unstrut is crossed again, after which it continues along the dam towards Wendelstein with its castle.
From Wendelstein, the path leads straight to the Ziegelrodaer Forst , where you pass the old Roßleben potash works with the spoil dump and the current landfill and composting facility. Once you have this behind you, you pass the archaeological site of stone box graves down to Roßleben . By the way, at the landfill there is a signpost for the first time that signposts the "Feengrotten-Kyffhäuser-Weg" in the direction of Kyffhäuser, but the "Kyffhäuser-Feengrotten-Weg" in the opposite direction. This is consistently maintained until Bad Frankenhausen .
From Roßleben it goes through fields in the direction of Artern , which can be reached from Bottendorf following the Unstrut cycle path via Schönewerda , Kalbsrieth and Ritteburg . From there it goes over meadows and fields to Ichstedt and Udersleben . Along the edge of the Kyffhäuser Mountains you reach Bad Frankenhausen on the southern edge.
From Bad Frankenhausen it goes once more across the Kyffhäuser Mountains towards Tilleda , past the Tilledaer Tor , Ameisental , Pfützental and Königsholz . Shortly before Tilleda the path turns sharply to the left and follows the Long Valley to the junction to the right up to the ruins of the Reichsburg Kyffhausen with the lower, middle and upper castle and the Kyffhäuser monument . The signpost there shows 207 km to Saalfeld, but hiked it should be more than 230 km.
Elevation profile
The path includes numerous, sometimes steep, ascents and descents. The highest point is the Hohe Straße between Großkochberg and Orlamünde at approx. 500 m above sea level. The lowest point is Kleinjena at the level of the Unstrut confluence with the Saale at almost 100 m. The adjacent graphic shows approximately the height profile of the route based on data from Google Earth.
history
The story of the trail is somewhat obscure. It is said to have been created as early as the first quarter of the twentieth century, but then to have been forgotten. Only in the last few years has it been re-signposted and thus revived.
