The Punta Gorda Airport ( IATA code : PGD , ICAO code : KPGD ) is the commercial airport of the American small town of Punta Gorda in the US state of Florida .

Location and transport links

Punta Gorda Airport is six kilometers southeast of downtown Punta Gorda. Interstate 75 runs west of the airport and shares the route with Florida State Road 93 .

Major airports in the vicinity are Southwest Florida International Airport , located around 50 km to the southeast, and Sarasota – Bradenton International Airport, around 75 km to the northwest .

Punta Gorda Airport is not involved in local public transport. Passengers have to use rental cars and taxis.

history

Planning for the Punta Gorda Army Airfield began in 1941. Three years later, the number of soldiers in the barracks peaked at 1,000. In addition, two squadrons of military pilots were stationed in Punta Gorda in training at the same time. The 40  P-40 Warhawk were later exchanged for P-51 Mustang . You were part of the 3rd Fighter Command of the Third Air Force based at Drew Field near Tampa . In addition, the Punta Gorda Army Airfield over possessed transport aircraft of type C-45 and C-47 . In Punta Gorda, the final training for the pilots of the fighter aircraft took place before the war effort.

After the war ended, the War Assets Administration gave the property to Charlotte County . In 1965 the Florida Legislature created the Charlotte County Development Authority, an independent special district and tax authority. The laws have been changed several times over the years, and in 1993 tax powers were lifted. In 1998 the law was re-codified and the name changed to Charlotte County Airport Authority.

From 2007 DayJet and Skybus Airlines offered scheduled flights . However, both airlines ceased operations in the course of the following year, initially with Skybus Airlines on April 5 and DayJet on September 19. On November 22nd, 2008 Direct Air started flights in Punta Gorda. Allegiant Air followed on March 5, 2009 . In the same year, the surface of taxiways  A and C was renewed and widened to 18 meters. Two years later, the airport was renamed from Charlotte County Airport to Punta Gorda Airport . Vision Airlines was also added as the third airline this year . In February 2012, a new control tower was put into operation. In 2012 Direct Air ceased operations, while Vision Airlines ceased flights to Punta Gorda Airport. An expansion of the passenger terminal was completed in May 2016. In the fall of 2016, Frontier Airlines moved some scheduled flights from Fort Myers to Punta Gorda. In July 2017, Frontier Airlines announced that they would no longer offer flights in Punta Gorda the following fall, making Allegiant Air the airport's only airline again.

Runways

The Punta Gorda Airport has a total of three runways , which are designed in a triangular shape. Eastern runway 04/22 is the airport's main runway. It is 2192 m long and 46 m wide. At its southern end it crosses the western runway 15/33. This is 1734 m long and also 46 m wide. The northern runway 09/27 is 803 m long and 18 m wide. It is used for general aviation.

The airport has a passenger terminal with eight  gates . It has no passenger boarding bridges . The terminal is located on the western side of the airport site, next to runway 15/33. The terminal is named after the Bailey brothers from Punta Gorda who took part in World War II , the Korean War and the Vietnam War .

The control tower is located at the western end of the airport, around 300 m northwest of the passenger terminal.

Punta Gorda Airport in regular service exclusively by the airline Allegiant Air fly. This offers direct flights to 48 national destinations.
