action

Band history

Bernd Wand, Dirk Eberhard ("Dickie") Schubert and the drummer Meinhard Gnom founded a band called Freakazzé in Brunsbüttel (Schleswig-Holstein) in the early 1980s . One song consists exclusively of barking dogs, which follows the melody of Big Ben's hour strike ( Westminster strike ).

Freakazzé meets producer Torsten Bage, who joins Freakazzé , and Freakazzé becomes Fraktus . Meinhard Gnom leaves the band, but accompanies them for a short time as a roadie.

The record Tut Ench Amour is considered a milestone in the history of Fraktus. The band is way ahead of its time and subsequently switched from the music label Zickzack Records to Ariola .

During the production of the LP Automate , conflicts within the band became apparent, whereupon the record company used external producers and composers. The plate therefore looks overproduced and smooth. Die- hard fans and critics accuse Fraktus of having sold itself to the industry with Automate .

Fraktus' last appearance at Turbine in Hamburg in November 1983 marks the provisional end of the band's short career. During the concert, a short circuit on a theremin leads to a fire that burns the venue down to the ground. The band split up shortly afterwards.

comeback

Since the group Fraktus is seen in retrospect as the founder of techno , years later the music producer Roger Dettner ( Devid Striesow ) visits the former band members. He finds the former singer Dickie in his Hamburg internet café “Surf n'Schlurf”, where he still walks around in 1980s clothes. The hypochondriac sound tinkerer Bernd works in Brunsbüttel in his parents' optician's shop. He now makes music together with his parents and calls this Fraktus 2 . Torsten Bage has meanwhile made money with commercial pop music and now lives in Ibiza.

It is not easy to win the three of them for a comeback: Despite his heavily pregnant girlfriend, Roger neglects his private life and travels with Dickie and Bernd to Torsten in Ibiza. He manages to organize a first, disastrous appearance. When the stay in a hip production studio was unsuccessful, Roger stumbled through the city drunk and attacked complete strangers with a kebab stick.

The band members of Fraktus are now getting their original lo-fi original instruments they made themselves and then still make a successful performance in a Hamburg parking garage (the place where the turbine used to be ).

The fictional band history is authenticated by the inclusion of numerous interviews about the meaning of Fraktus with real musicians and experts such as Matthias Schuster , Jan Delay , Blixa Bargeld , HP Baxxter , Steve Blame , Peter Illmann , Alex Christensen , Jürgen Laarmann , Dieter Meier , Hans Nieswandt , Stephan Remmler , Marusha and Peter Urban .

background

Fraktus live at Beatpol in Dresden , 2013

The band Fraktus is an invention of the artist group Studio Braun : In 2006, Studio Braun member Rocko Schamoni published the piece Affe sucht Liebe under the name Fraktus on the compilation Operation Pudel 2006 ZD 50 . In the following year, Studio Braun appeared as Fraktus at the Melt ! Festival, with the trio staging its appearance as the band's comeback after 25 years of stage abstinence in order to be able to use excerpts from it in the planned film.

At the start of the film in 2012, Studio Braun released the music album Millennium Edition ( Staatsakt ) as the band Fraktus , and Affe sucht Liebe was re-released as a 7 "single on Pudel Produkte. As part of a comeback tour, several Fraktus concerts were subsequently given.

The idea behind the fictional band is similar to that of the fictional British metal band Spın̈al Tap in the US film This Is Spinal Tap from 1984.

additional

In episode 38 of the ARD crime series Murder with a View , the band is the focus, because Fraktus roadie Gonzo is murdered. The script was written by Fraktus director Jessen, who subsequently also directed, and Benjamin Hessler.

In episode 53 of the computer game program Reload on December 2, 2014, Fraktus also made a guest appearance. In this, Torsten Bage appears as producer and mastermind of the successor to the fictional computer game classic Smirkeys Dopehouse .

In the Neo Magazin Royale broadcast on December 10, 2015, Jan Böhmermann advertised the latest Fraktus Welcome to the internet album . The group appeared as a musical guest at the end of the show.

Reviews

“This film drowned in such a genius and lies that some people fall for the reviews themselves. ' Spiegel Online ' called 'Fraktus' 'perhaps the funniest film experience that German cinema has to offer this year'. "

“Of course, the Studio Braun members Heinz Strunk, Rocko Schamoni, Jacques Palminger and their actor-collaborator Devid Striesow satirize the most diverse formats and types. Sometimes it is the whispering narrative tone of public-law youth culture explanatory programs like 'Pop 2000', sometimes the scripted reality Schmonzes from TV series like 'Goodbye Germany' or 'Die Geissens' that provides the overdrawing template. "

- Josef Engels : The world

“The whole film is a kind of homeland comedy for people who, in better days, stood around in the Hamburg Poodle Club and warmed themselves on an Astra bulb, sometimes you even think you are dealing with a poorly concealed self-portrait: Like Fraktus, Palmingers also have it , Schamoni and Strunk have now passed their anarchic days, what started as punk humor has been part of the mainstream for years. "

- Jürgen Ziemer : The time

"The band without feelings revolutionized the genre and is still considered a pioneer in electronic music."

- Timo Stein : Cicero Online

"Mockumentary garnished with comments from numerous (real) greats from the German music industry, which satirically pokes fun at the clichés of popular band documentaries."
