Franklin County is a county in the state of Maine in the United States . The county seat is in Farmington . It is named after Benjamin Franklin .

According to the US Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 4,518 square kilometers. Of these, 120 square kilometers, corresponding to 2.67 percent, are water areas. The county is bordered clockwise by the counties: Somerset County , Kennebec County , Androscoggin County , Oxford County, and Le Granit, Canada.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 29,467 people. There were 11,806 households and 7,744 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.96% White, 0.24% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.17% other races Groups; 0.81% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.54% of the population.
Of the 11,806 households, 29.50% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.40% were married couples living together, 9.20% were single mothers. 34.40% were not families. 25.80% are single households and 10.50% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.88 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.50% residents under 18 years of age, 11.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 89.20 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,459 , and the median income for a family was $ 37,863. Males had a median income of $ 30,475 versus $ 20,442 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,796. 14.60% of the population and 10.70% of families are below the poverty line. 17.90% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.50% were 65 years of age or older.

Franklin County is divided into 21 separate parishes. There is no city below. Four areas are organized as plantations , the remaining 17 parishes are towns . Another town, Madrid , was deprived of its right to self-government in April 2000 due to its falling population.
