The 1990/91 season of the Oberliga was the 17th season of the Oberliga as the third highest division in football in Germany after the introduction of the two-track - later single-track - 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season.
Due to the German reunification , the Oberliga Berlin was held for the last time this season. It was replaced by the Oberliga Nordost , which was made up of some of the clubs from the Oberliga Berlin, clubs from the first-class DDR-Oberliga and the second-class NOFV league .

Promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga
In the four rounds of promotion, FC Remscheid , TSV 1860 Munich , BSV Stahl Brandenburg and 1. FC Lok Leipzig were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga as group winners .
1. FC Lok Leipzig played in the 2. Bundesliga under the name VfB Leipzig .
