Mexican games
Mexico was seeded during the group draw and therefore did not have to face opponents such as Germany, France or Italy in the preliminary round.
Preliminary round
The Mexicans played their first group game in front of over 110,000 spectators in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City against Belgium , the hosts dominated the game and led 2-0 after 39 minutes through goals from Fernando Quirarte and star striker Hugo Sánchez. The Belgians then only managed the connection goal in stoppage time in the first half.
The second group game against Paraguay started with a quick goal for the Mexicans when Luis Flores took the lead in the third minute after great work from Raul Servin. The Paraguayans were only able to equalize five minutes before the end, despite this tie Mexico was almost through. With a narrow 1-0 win over World Cup newcomer Iraq, Mexico was able to claim first place in the table.

Final round
In the round of 16 against Bulgaria , the Mexicans were again the dominant team, the outstanding man of this game was Manuel Negrete. He took the lead in the 35th minute and prepared the decisive 2-0 for Servin in the 61st minute. Mexico was in a World Cup quarter-finals for the second time since 1970 (at that time also in its own country), the opponent being the reigning runner-up in Germany.
In a defensive game, neither side could come to any decisive scenes, even when the Germans were outnumbered after Thomas Berthold was sent off from the 84th, Mexico did not manage to come to any decisive scenes. Javier Aguirre received a yellow-red card in extra time. Since neither of the two teams managed to score a goal after 120 minutes, the penalty shoot-out had to decide on the semi-finals. While Allofs , Brehme , Matthäus and Littbarski met the Germans from the penalty spot, Negrete and Quirarte failed because of Toni Schumacher . Mexico was eliminated.
