particularities

  • National coach Carlos Alberto Parreira took the poor performance of his team compared to expectations as an opportunity to resign two weeks after the World Cup.
  • After being eliminated in the quarter-finals against France, Roberto Carlos also announced his resignation from the national team. He was heavily criticized after his elimination against France, especially in Brazil. Instead of covering Henry, he had pulled his socks up before the free kick followed by Thierry Henry's winning goal.
  • Ronaldo set the only record for World Cup goalscorers at this World Cup with his 15th goal.
  • The game against Ghana was later suspected of manipulation.
