career

Player career

Koch went through the youth teams of several local clubs until he joined the youth department of Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1984 . There he was trained until December 1990, before he moved to the then top division club SpVgg Erkenschwick . During the 1991/92 season he was obliged by the then Bundesliga club Fortuna Düsseldorf , but initially received no match practice there. After the relegation of Fortuna that season, he had his first professional appearance on November 28, 1992 in the game against VfL Wolfsburg in the second division and became a regular goalkeeper. He stayed in Düsseldorf even after his team was relegated to third division in 1993 . The following year, with his participation, the march from third to first class began. In 1995 , Koch played his first first division game .

In 1997 he moved to PSV in Eindhoven . Since he could not prevail in the Netherlands (he came to a Champions League appearance), he moved to Arminia Bielefeld in the current season . With Arminia, Koch was relegated to the second division after the season, but managed to get promoted again in 1999 . During the current season he moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in early 2000 and became a regular player there. From the beginning of 2003 he was ousted by Tim Wiese . His contract was not renewed, so in 2003/2004 Koch moved to Energie Cottbus . Although he was number 1 in Cottbus too, he moved to MSV Duisburg the next year .

With the MSV it rose again in 2005 in the Bundesliga and was in the 2005/06 season to the team captain . His popularity was reflected in the choice of player of the season, which is carried out by Zebra magazine among all MSV fans after each season . Koch was the first player in Duisburg to receive this award twice in a row (2004/05, 2005/06). During the winter break of the 2006/07 season , Koch was deposed as captain by club president Walter Hellmich . He had a contract with MSV until 2009, although he wanted to participate in other club activities of MSV Duisburg after his career ended. However, because of an unspecified misconduct, he was dismissed by the MSV, against which he sued in court. Finally, Koch accepted the resignation.

In July 2007, Koch moved to the Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb . He was a regular goalkeeper there and played several UEFA Cup games, he was also Croatian champion in 2007/08 and cup winners in 2008 with Dinamo Zagreb. After one season, he went to the then Austrian champions Rapid Vienna for free and signed a one-year contract. In Vienna he was supposed to represent the injured goalkeeper Helge Payer . During a league game against city rivals FK Austria Wien on August 24, 2008, a firecracker thrown from the Austria fan block exploded in the immediate vicinity of Koch. He had to be replaced injured. He suffered a bang trauma and a circulatory collapse. The criminal division of the Bundesliga sentenced Austria to a maximum fine of 10,000 euros, Rapid to 7,000 euros for the incident. The perpetrator could not be identified. One suspect was acquitted. After a few months of therapy in Germany, his contract was terminated at the end of January 2009.

In March 2009, Koch ended his active career because of persistent balance problems caused by the bang-related inner ear damage.

Coaching career

From 2009 Koch was the sporting director at SC Herford . In the 2010/11 season and in June 2012 he also worked as a coach for the national division. An attempt to play in goal for SC Herford failed due to the aftermath of his injury.

At the beginning of September 2012, Koch signed a contract valid until the end of the 2012/13 season as a goalkeeper coach with the first division club Dubai SC from the United Arab Emirates with an option for another year. The club did not take up the option. After he had trained the goalkeepers of the association of contract soccer players during the summer break , he got a one-year contract as goalkeeping coach of the third division club SG Sonnenhof Großaspach . In the first half of the 2015/16 season he was temporarily the goalkeeping coach of the regional league club VfB Oldenburg. In January 2016, Koch moved to the coaching staff of FC Wil 1900 from the Swiss Challenge League for four months .

For the 2019/20 season , Koch was introduced as the new goalkeeping coach of the regional division SC Fortuna Köln . There he works in a team with trainer Thomas Stratos and assistant trainer Zlatko Muhović .
