The Johannes-Brahms-Gymnasium Hamburg (short: JBG) is a state high school founded in 1969 in the Hamburg district of Bramfeld . The school has been called Gymnasium Bramfeld since it was founded and was renamed after Johannes Brahms in 2007 .

History and architecture

The grammar school was founded in 1969 in Hamburg-Bramfeld . The main building is a three-storey series construction of the "Type 68", also called "Double H" according to the floor plan. School buildings of this series type were built around 50 times in Hamburg from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. In addition, there is a specialist house, an upper level house, a three-field sports hall and an administration building with the teachers' room on the rather extensive site. In 2016/17 an extension with a cafeteria was built.

When it was renamed Johannes-Brahms-Gymnasium in 2007, the educational goals were reorganized and new profiles were set up.

In 2011, the grammar school took part in the climate and environmental school program for the first time , as of 2019 there are 66 schools in Hamburg. In 2015, the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung recognized the grammar school for its high school profile "Discovering Culture - Communicating Culture".

In 2017 the school won the European School Music Prize.

School profile

With almost 650 students (2017/18), the school is a rather small grammar school compared to Hamburg. Most of the students at the grammar school come from the surrounding districts of Bramfeld , Steilshoop and Farmsen-Berne , some of them also from northern Wandsbek . The catchment area of the grammar school is therefore mixed, there are partly detached single-family houses, partly more dense development up to the large housing estate Steilshoop.

When the social index for Hamburg schools was surveyed in 2011, a social index of 4 was calculated for the JBG - on a scale from 1 (disadvantageous requirements of the student body, highest need for support) to 6 (best conditions, no need for support). In the 2016/17 school year, 43% of HSG students had a migrant background , slightly above the average of all Hamburg high schools.

At the Johannes Brahms Gymnasium there are three profiles that are implemented in the observation level (grades 5-6) and intermediate level (grades 7-10) in corresponding classes.

music

The aim of the music profile is to give the children the joy of making music together. In addition to choir lessons, the children receive two years lessons on an instrument of their choice at the beginning of the 5th school year.

Researcher

The students learn to systematically observe, describe and evaluate experiments, especially in partner and group work. The computer is an instrument that is used to record and display the data found.

It's about dealing with natural phenomena and trying things out in the professional field of natural scientists and engineers. The pupils experience additional motivation by taking part in scientific competitions, especially NATEX. In this competition, the independent planning and logging of experiments is increasingly encouraged and trained. The topics offer experimentation and research opportunities and are based on everyday phenomena.

Sports

The focus of this class is on cross-sport talent training. For this, the students go through many sports. An additional goal here is a special mobility and athletic training. This profile enables the students to practice differentiated and intensive sports. The contents of the sports lessons are based on the specifications of the curriculum and an internal school curriculum.

Another focus is participation in tournaments and competitions, such as B. Youth trains for the Olympics. Project days are used for sporting activities at extracurricular learning locations; a class trip with a sporting focus complements the program.
