Dániel Gyurta [ ˈdaːniɛl ˈɟurtɒ ] (born May 4, 1989 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian swimmer .
Career
The Hungarian breaststroke swimmer Gyurta was one of the most sensational medal winners at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . He became the youngest swimming medalist at the Olympic Games in the 200m chest. The 15-year-old Hungarian won the silver medal behind the Japanese Kōsuke Kitajima , ahead of the current US world record holder Brendan Hansen .
Gyurta's swimming style is characterized by restraint over the first 150 m, in order to then ensure a decision from behind with a brilliant final spurt on the last 50 m lane. In this style he wrestled the American down. However, the exceptional swimmer from Japan was out of reach for him.
Daniel Gyurta became world champion over 200 meters chest on July 31, 2009 at the swimming world championships in Rome in a European record time of 02: 07.64 minutes.
At the European Short Course Championships in 2009 , he won the gold medal over the 200-meter chest and the silver medal over the 100-meter chest.
Gyurta achieved his greatest success so far at the Olympic Games in London in 2012 , where he became Olympic champion over 200 meters chest in a world record time of 2: 07.28 minutes. This record was undercut by the Japanese Takihiro Yamaguchi by 0.27 s in September . Gyurta bequeathed a replica of his gold medal to the parents of his Norwegian competitor Alexander Dale Oen, who had died a few months earlier .
At the short course world championships in 2012 in Istanbul in December of that year, he climbed to the podium again (2: 01.35 minutes).
He has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2016 .
