Halloween is an American horror film and an alternate sequel to Halloween from 1978. This eleventh installment of the Halloween franchise premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2018 and kicked off on October 25, 2018 in US and German cinemas.

action

The film ties in with the events of the film Halloween - The Night of Horror , but Michael Myers is shot by psychiatrist Dr. Loomis arrested at Laurie Strode's house in Haddonfield instead of fleeing as in the original second part to continue killing. Michael is again imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital, where journalists Aaron Korey and Dana Haines visit him to find out more about his case. Dr. Sartain, Michael's psychologist, leads the two of them to the multiple murderer. When Korey takes out Michael's mask, it shows no reaction.

Shortly afterwards, Korey and Haines drive to Laurie Strode, whose character is marked by the events of 40 years ago. She lives lonely on a ranch where she has trained herself and her daughter Karen for a possible reunion with Michael. It is learned, however, that Karen was taken away from her by the youth welfare office at the age of twelve and that the two have a broken relationship. Karen is now also the mother of a daughter, Allyson, who is invited to a party with her new boyfriend Cameron on Halloween evening.

The night before Halloween Michael is supposed to be moved to another prison, but the bus in which he and Dr. Sartain are in an accident because Michael attacks the driver. Michael first kills a police officer and later a man and his son and steals their car, while Dr. Sartain survived injured. The next day Michael kills the staff there at a gas station and receives his characteristic overalls before he murders Korey and Haines in the toilet and takes his mask. Arrived in Haddonfield, Michael begins an indiscriminate series of murders on Halloween evening, which also includes babysitter Vicky and her friend Dave.

Meanwhile, at the party, Allyson catches Cameron cheating on her and breaks up with him on the spot. She and Oscar, a friend of Cameron's, are on their way home and are attacked by Michael, who kills Oscar in the process. Allyson escapes and is met by Officer Frank Hawkins, who had dealt with Michael 40 years earlier, and Dr. Sartain taken. On the way they meet Michael and run over him. When Hawkins and Dr. Sartain get out of the car to make sure that Michael is really dead, Dr. Sartain to the officer and kill him. He pulls the unconscious Michael into the car to Allyson, who comes to and Dr. Kills Sartain and two policemen. Allyson escapes him again and runs through a forest to Laurie's house, where Laurie, Karen and Karen's husband Ray have already holed up.

Michael reaches the house in front of Allyson and first kills Ray. Then a fight breaks out between Laurie and Michael in the house, during which Allyson enters the house and hides with Karen in the basement under the kitchen. When Michael reveals the entrance, the three women push him down the stairs and lock him there. Then Laurie sets the basement and the rest of the house on fire. The three of them then leave the burning house and are taken away by a van.

Filming and production

Originally, a direct sequel to the second film Halloween II - The Horror Returns (1981) was planned under the working title "Halloween Returns" , the content of which would have ignored all films thereafter. In February 2017, however, John Carpenter personally announced via his official Facebook account that he would be working as a creative consultant on a new Halloween film. As it turned out, this in turn ignores all events since the original film and is thus a direct continuation of the first part.

Most of the filming took place in Charleston , South Carolina from January 13, 2018 to February 19, 2018 . The reactions to the first test screening of the film prompted the filmmakers to shoot a new ending scene there on June 11, 2018. The film was produced by Blumhouse Productions , Miramax , Rough House Pictures and Trancas International Films .

Classification in the film series

The reason that this film is not a continuation of the eighth part ( Halloween: Resurrection (2002)) of the original Halloween film series is that screenwriter Danny McBride urged that the rest of the story be deleted because it would be less exciting and too predictable if Michael Myers, as the brother of Laurie Strode, always tries to only murder his family members. This is not uncommon for the Halloween series. Halloween III (1982) was already a standalone film that had no reference to its predecessor. Halloween H20 (1998) again ignored all events after the second part.

synchronization

The German synchronization was for a dialogue book by Hannes Maurer under the dialogue director of Maurer and Marius Clarén on behalf of the FFS Film & TV sync GmbH Berlin .

reception

Reviews

Halloween was able to convince 79% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 67 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

Mark Kermode of The Guardian describes Halloween as a well-packaged modern slasher film , the manufacturing a balance between weird humor, genre references, bloody G-18 moments and efficiently executed showdowns. While the iconic Michael Myers mask has been cleverly aged, the "pure evil" in Myers' actions creates a strange, unrepeatable retro feeling. In addition, key scenes from the first part were cleverly reversed. This is how you stage and interweave Laurie , who is an “angel of revenge”, and Michael as alternating mirror images of the hunter and the hunted. In conclusion, Kermode draws that there is an argument about whether Halloween is really scary. However, it is reassuring that a man in a mask would still reach the audience.

Peter Travers from Rolling Stone positively highlights the development of Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis . The naive girl becomes a woman full of feelings such as loss, regret and separation, but also wildness. This deepens the humanity of the role without diminishing its resolve. Curtis' portrayal is a "wild roar" that also pays attention to small nuances. Negatively, Travers emphasizes that David Gordon Green relies too much on violence in the style of the Saw films and lacks the satirical bite of a get out , although the plot is very similar to that of the predecessor.

Daniel Krüger from the Musikexpress emphasizes the decision to ignore all sequels of Halloween - The Night of Horror , because it allowed the film to be reduced to a minimum of characters and plot. Jamie Lee Curtis plays her role of Laurie Strode wonderfully fanatical, whereby "the highlight [...] is the lack of fear of the victim of her tormentor". Krüger also praises the successful visual aesthetics and the lack of jump scares , which are superbly implemented, especially in a long, seamless scene in which "in a few minutes [...] the cold-bloodedness and lack of humor of the famous killer are brought to the point" be. In conclusion, Krüger draws that the film is very predictable, "but at least implemented with enough relish".

Gross profit

On the opening weekend, Halloween made it to number 1 on the US cinema charts in the North American region with a gross profit of 77.5 million US dollars . This enabled it to mark the second best theatrical release of a horror film, the second best theatrical release in October, the best theatrical release of a film with a female lead over 55 years of age and the best theatrical release within the film series. On the second weekend, the film was able to reach number 1 in the US charts and, with grossing US $ 32 million, jumped the $ 100 million mark in North America. In Germany, Halloween topped the cinema charts with 325,000 visitors on its opening weekend, with the film grossing three million euros . The worldwide income amounts to so far to 253.69 million US dollars, of which he could bring in 159.34 million in the North American area alone. The film has so far recorded 1,084,208 visitors in Germany.
