Helmuth Freiherr von Maltzahn (born January 6, 1840 in Gez , Demmin district , Pomerania ; † February 11, 1923 in Giz) was President of the Prussian Province of Pomerania in Stettin and a member of the Reichstag .

origin

His parents were the district administrator and manor owner Axel von Maltzahn (1808-1841) and his wife Auguste von Lützow-Boddin (born February 9, 1820 - May 9, 1891), a daughter of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin State Minister Ludwig von Lützow .

life and work

After graduating from high school, Helmuth Ludwig Wilhelm von Maltzahn studied law in Erlangen , Heidelberg (member of the Corps Vandalia ) and Berlin . He began his career in 1860 as an auscultator . In 1861 he became a trainee court judge, in 1862 a government referendar in Koblenz , and in 1866 a government assessor . In 1867 he resigned from civil service to manage his own property. In the years 1868 to 1872 he had a classicist manor house built in the form of Validz Castle .

He took part in the campaigns of 1866 and 1870/71 as a cavalry officer. In 1871, as a member of the German Conservative Party, he became a member of the Reichstag (MdR) for the Anklam-Demmin constituency and took over the chairmanship of the budget committee. He was a member of the Reichstag as a member of the constituency Stettin 1 (Demmin - Anklam) until 1888.

From 1888 to 1893 he was State Secretary in the Reich Treasury . In 1900 he finally took over the duties of Chief President of the Pomeranian Province in Stettin and held this office until 1911. In 1909 he became hereditary land marshal of Old Western Pomerania . He supported the establishment of the Historical Commission for Pomerania in 1910/1911 and was its first chairman.

In his Dohrn biography, Theodor Heuss names him with the abbreviation "von Maltzahn-VALZ".

family

In 1867 he married Anna von Rohrscheidt, who was born in Annaburg (* October 10, 1847, † November 26, 1913). The couple had several children:
