The Henry County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is in Abbeville .

geography

The county is located almost in the extreme southeast of Alabama; to the east it borders Georgia and has an area of ​​1472 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. In Alabama, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Houston County , Dale County, and Barbour Counties .

history

The county was formed as the original county on December 13, 1819, and several counties emerged from it. It was named after Patrick Henry , who was a delegate to the Continental Congress and who spoke the famous words before the provisional congress of the Colony of Virginia against the backdrop of the American Revolution : "Give me liberty or give me death." ("Give me freedom or death"). He later served as the governor of Virginia and a member of the Philadelphia Convention .

Three structures in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 2, 2020, the Kennedy House , the Oates House and the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Depot .

Henry County's population was 16,310 as of the 2000 census . 179 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,525 households and 4,730 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer.
