The Houston County is a county in the state of Alabama of the United States . The county seat is Dothan .

The county is located in the extreme southeast of Alabama, bordering Florida's northern border to the south and Georgia to the east and has an area of ​​1,506 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Geneva County , Dale County, and Henry County .

history

Houston County was formed on February 9th from parts of Dale County, Geneva County, and Henry County. It was named after the politician George Smith Houston . Houston was first a member of the Alabama House of Representatives and Attorney of the state before being elected to the United States House of Representatives . He later served as governor of Alabama and became a senator shortly before his death .

Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of April 2, 2020, including the Dothan Opera House , the Federal Building and US Courthouse, and the Main Street Commercial District .

Houston County had a population of 88,787 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 1,148 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 35,834 households and 25,119 families. The population density was 64 inhabitants per square kilometer. The median income for a household in the 34,431 USD , and the median income for a family 42,437 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,092 versus $ 21,409 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,759. 11.8 percent of families and 15.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
