Hull Trains is the brand name of the British railway company Hull Trains Company Ltd. and a subsidiary of the First Group . It operates an InterCity service between King's Cross Station in London and Kingston upon Hull ( Hull for short ) in Yorkshire .

history

The company Hull Trains Company Ltd was founded in September 1999 as a joint subsidiary of GB Railways Group Plc (80% of the company shares) and Renaissance Trains Ltd. (20%) founded to operate passenger trains between London and (Kingston upon-) Hull via Doncaster and Selby , initially under the name Hull Trains . At this time, no direct trains from other railway companies were offered on this approximately 300 km long route.

With the acquisition of the GB Railways Group by the First Group in 2003 , the First Group also acquired 80% of the shares in the Hull Trains Company Ltd. Since mid-2008, the membership of the First Group has also been made clear by name, as the company no longer appears as Hull Trains , but as First Hull Trains .

First Hull Trains is an "open access" operator. The majority of British railroad companies active in passenger transport operate subnetworks created as part of the privatization of the former British Railways , which are awarded in franchising processes by the Strategic Rail Authority . Hull Trains, on the other hand, applied independently for access rights to the public rail network (operated by Railtrack or Network Rail ), which were initially granted over a period of two years and from 2002 over a period of ten years. The company is not bound by the guidelines of the Strategic Rail Authority - however, unlike the operators of less lucrative sub-networks, it is not entitled to any subsidies . The British cross-company tariff system called National Rail is used at First Hull Trains. In addition, the company offers special tariffs that apply only to its own trains.

Route network

First Hull Trains started operating in September 2000 with initially three pairs of trains between London and Kingston upon Hull with stops in Doncaster, among others . The number of passengers has developed positively, so that in 2005 six connections will be offered in each direction Monday to Friday, four on Saturdays and three on Sundays and public holidays. Trains take between 2 hours 33 minutes and 2 hours 50 minutes for the 300 km route between London and Hull. In 2004 around 400,000 passengers used the offer.

In 2008, First Hull Trains applied to the Office of Rail Regulation for an extension of the existing concession as well as permission to offer commercial passenger train services between Harrogate , York and London from summer 2009 and from Grimsby and Lincoln to London from 2010 .

Rolling stock

At the start of operations, Hull Trains used leased vehicles from Anglia Railways , which was also part of the GB Railways Group. These were four diesel railcars of the series "class 170". These vehicles, also known as “Turbostar”, reach a top speed of 160 km / h and each offer 159 seats.

After the access rights to the public rail network, which were initially only granted for two years, were extended by ten years, Hull Trains procured new, 200 km / h “Pioneer” diesel multiple units of the “class 222” series from Bombardier Transportation . These vehicles were handed over to Hull Trains from May 2005. Since 2008, First Hull Trains has also been using two “class 180” railcars previously used by First Great Western . Later in 2008 two more "class 180" railcars were leased, the four "class 222" railcars were transferred to East Midlands Trains in 2009 .
