AS Ice Bucket Challenge

Ice Bucket Challenge

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge ( German  Eiskübelherausforderung ) was an imaginary than fundraising campaign, short-term hype in the summer of 2014. It was on the nerve disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw attention (ALS) and raise funds for the research and treatment. The challenge was to pour a bucket of cold water over your head and then nominate three or more people to do the same within 24 hours and donate 10  US dollars or euros to the ALS Association . If you don't want to pour a bucket of water over your head, you should donate 100 US dollars or euros to the ALS Association (ALSA).

history

The exact origin of the action is unknown. It is possible that a successor may become known at the turn of 2013/14 Coldwater Challenge ( German  cold water challenge ). According to other sources, the Ice Bucket Challenge was initiated by the Frates family from Boston. The action became known through a live broadcast of the Golf Channel Morning Show in the USA on June 30, 2014. Two weeks later, the golfer Chris Kennedy completed the challenge and posted the video on July 15, 2014 on Twitter . He then nominated his cousin, whose husband was affected by the ALS. The campaign was spread more widely through social networks such as Twitter and Facebook .

The idea of using the challenge for a fundraising campaign for the benefit of the ALS Association came from former baseball star Peter Frates , who himself had ALS and has been involved in ALS research for years. He is committed to the Foundation AL ife S tory Foundation. The now completely paralyzed Frates did not pour ice water over himself, but nominated numerous friends, including many active US athletes, to take part in the campaign. After the campaign had spread successfully, Frates himself had ice water poured over him on July 14th.

The NHL team Pittsburgh Penguins , which has the largest fan base in the NHL, played an important role in the media dissemination . The Hockey -Stürmer Craig Adams , whose father Paul Cellucci died of ALS in the summer of 2013, was Twitter from the Pittsburgh Penguins Fan Organization Pens Pride called to declare the action in ice hockey. He did so on August 6, 2014. Among other things, he nominated his teammate Sidney Crosby , who accepted the challenge a day later - on his birthday. This video reached several million clicks within a very short time, as Crosby is one of the most popular ice hockey players in the NHL. A total of 649 NHL players took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge. Via the NHL, the challenge was also spread to the other US professional leagues. The Assistant General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Bill Guerin was one of the first to invite fans to attend. The campaign ended up in Europe via the US sports teams and their European “legionnaires”.

The idea of this ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is that you pour a bucket of cold water over your head and so - for a few seconds - feel the feeling of paralysis in your body that a sick person has to endure for life.

Response and donations

From July 15 to August 21, 2014, the ALS Association raised $ 41.8 million in donations, up from $ 2.1 million in the same period last year. In addition, the ALSA recorded more than 300,000 new donors. As of August 27, 2014, it had donated $ 94.3 million and ALSA had more than 2.1 million new donors.

Krzysztof Nowak Foundation

Many German celebrities, such as Manuel Neuer , Christoph Metzelder , Mats Hummels , İlkay Gündoğan , Roy Präger or Martin Kind donated to the Krzysztof Nowak Foundation of VfL Wolfsburg . Companies were also encouraged to donate as part of the Ice Bucket Challenge, such as Volkswagen.

Charité - University Medicine Berlin

The ALS outpatient clinic at the Charité in Berlin , which specializes in the treatment of people with ALS, registered a significantly higher volume of donations. Within 10 days, more than 10,000 people donated over 680,000 euros to the ALS outpatient department of the Charité. Prominent donors were Sigmar Gabriel , Anne Will , Axel Prahl , Dieter Zetsche , Jürgen Vogel and Mario Barth . The initiative “Help for people with ALS”, which was founded in 2011 by Jürgen R. Großmann, also donated to the Charité.

By the end of 2014, the number of donors increased from usually around a hundred, often larger, to 34,000 who donated 1.6 million euros. The ambulance staff was increased by one position, additional research is planned and 200,000 euros will go to the ALS supply network founded in 2011, which is used by the ALS ambulances in Bochum, Dresden, Hanover, Jena, Ulm and Wiesbaden. Ambulance manager Thomas Meyer finds "the connection of fun with a serious concern" still good and successful, it only bothered him if ALS is not mentioned in the campaign. The campaign was well received by almost all patients.

United Kingdom

In the UK, people have the opportunity to participate in the campaign for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, a sister organization of the ALS Association. The MND Association is the only national charity in England , Wales and Northern Ireland focused on research, care and campaigning on MND. In Scotland , MND Scotland supports patients and relatives affected by the effects of Motor Neurone Disease .

Most of the time, the participants were challenged to participate via social networks. Then the challenge had to be accepted within 24 hours and you should upload a video yourself, for example on Instagram or Facebook . Those who did this only had to donate $ 5 or $ 10. If this was not done, US $ 100 should be donated to the ALS Association.

As an alternative, some participants lay down in a tub with ice water or let cold water pour over them in the car.

criticism

The actor Steve-O criticized the fact that many of the celebrities donated, but forgot to draw attention to the disease and also ask fans for donations. The actual aim of the action would thus be missed. Only a few celebrities u. a. Charlie Sheen , Bill Gates or, for example, in Germany Sabrina Mockenhaupt, would have drawn attention to the disease in their videos.

The Frankfurter Rundschau criticized:

“In the meantime, the ice bucket wave continues without any great reference to this serious background. With the current flood of ice water in social networks, you get the impression that water is only poured to get people talking. […] So an idea that humorously packs a serious matter becomes a watered-down Internet phenomenon that is ultimately only exploited by many to stage themselves. "

The Doctors Against Animal Experiments Association urged all ice water nominees not to donate to the ALS Association, which, in their opinion, conduct cruel and senseless animal experiments .

Despite numerous ice water videos, the willingness to donate in Germany is apparently limited. The donation income of the ALSA in Germany is lower than in the USA and Great Britain, which was to be expected no different, because after all, most donors and challengers neither knew the ALSA, nor did they know where to transfer their donations to. Many German donations are made to local ALS-affiliated associations such as the ALS outpatient clinic of the Berlin Charité or, in the case of Sabrina Mockenhaupt, to the German Society for Muscle Sicknesses e. V. , who are very grateful for the donations received.

Prominent participants

Due to the worldwide spread of the campaign, many celebrities could be challenged to participate, who then donated larger amounts. US President Barack Obama was challenged, but turned it down and instead made a donation, as did Austrian President Heinz Fischer . Chancellor Angela Merkel was challenged by Stefan Kretzschmar , but did not comment on it. American football player Steve Gleason , who suffers from ALS himself, also took part in the campaign. The German comedian Oliver Pocher completed the challenge several times by parodying Karl Lagerfeld , Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin .

Executions

  • Instead of the expected ice water, Charlie Sheen poured several bills with an alleged value of US $ 10,000 over his head and stated that he wanted to donate them. He urged his nominees ( Jon Cryer , Chuck Lorre and Ashton Kutcher ) to do the same because the ice is melting, but the money could actually help people.
  • Patrick Stewart was filmed writing a check, he took two ice cubes from a waiting ice bucket to prepare a drink on the rocks .
  • Christof Innerhofer let an excavator shovel shower him with ice water.
  • Eminem performed the Ice Bucket Challenge with Mr. Porter and Rihanna at a concert in Detroit .
  • Paul Bissonnette had glacier water poured over him from a helicopter.
  • Conchita Wurst donated double the amount under the motto “Donate twice instead of ice” instead of pouring the ice water over herself.
  • The writer Vincent Kliesch completed the challenge in front of several thousand spectators in the arena of the Babelsberg film park in Potsdam.
  • In Norway, Joey Kelly first let himself hang upside down over ice-cold water and - after submitting his nominations - finally fell into it.
  • Sigmar Gabriel performed together with a parody of the polar bear Knut , did without the ice shower and donated to the ALS ambulance of the Charité.
