Route

The SR 836 begins at Tamiami on 137th Street , not far north of its intersection with US Highway 41 , which runs parallel to the expressway about three kilometers south to Miami. After about four kilometers in an easterly direction, it meets the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike (SR 821). After another seven kilometers, the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) is crossed. The road then passes Miami Airport on its southern side. On the last three kilometers to the shore of Biscayne Bay , or 1 km before the Midtown Interchange with Interstate 95 , the expressway is also called Interstate 395 . With the start of the MacArthur Causeway on the shore, State Road A1A finally begins in the direction of Miami Beach .

Further west past 87th Avenue , an additional $ 1.00 ($ 0.75 with SunPass) is charged in both directions. history

Interstate 395 in Miami

The first construction work on the expressway planned as Twentieth Street Tollway since 1964 between the Palmetto Expressway and US Highway 1 including the airport connection began in 1967 and ended in 1969. The second section to the Homestead Extension began in 1971 and was completed in 1974. 1974 was then after winning Super Bowls VII and VIII the street in honor of the Miami Dolphins in Dolphin Expressway renamed.

Construction of the newest and westernmost section began in 2004. This section was opened in 2007. The tolls are settled electronically, so cash payments are not possible.

The construction of additional lanes and a redesign of the highly frequented junction with State Road 826 are planned for the future. There are also considerations for a further, southward extension from the current west end to SW 136th Street . By 2014, tolling on the expressway will be the last toll road for the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority to be fully automated.

On May 24, 2010, construction began on the Port of Miami Tunnel , which is an extension of Interstate 395 to the Port of Miami and will be completed by 2014.
