Jean-Pierre "JP" Dumont (born April 1, 1978 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 873 games for the Chicago Blackhawks , Buffalo Sabers and Nashville Predators in the course of his active career between 1994 and 2012 National Hockey League on the position of the right winger . Dumont, who was selected in third overall position in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning the gold medal at the 2004 World Cup .
Career
Dumont played for the Foreurs de Val-d'Or in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Quebec during his junior years . In the 1996 NHL Entry Draft , the winger was drawn in third place by the New York Islanders . In 1998 he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks for Dmitri Nabokow and a draft pick , where he played his first NHL game. In the two years in which he was active for the Blackhawks, he did not make the breakthrough and during this time also played with the Portland Pirates in the American Hockey League and the Chicago Wolves and Cleveland Lumberjacks in the International Hockey League .
In March 2000 he was given to the Buffalo Sabers together with Doug Gilmour , in return the Blackhawks got the Czech Michal Grošek . The remainder of the season he played on the Sabers AHL farm team with the Rochester Americans . With good performance he recommended himself for the Sabers and so he played for the first time in the 2000/01 season exclusively in the NHL. With his 51 points he was the second best scorer in the team and over time he became a leading player and, for a short time, team captain . During the lockout season , Dumont was active from February 2005 for SC Bern from the Swiss National League , for which he scored nine points in 13 games.
In August 2006, he signed a two-year contract ($ 2.25 million per year) with the Nashville Predators after the Buffalo Sabers rejected his request for a raise ($ 2.9 million per year). In his first season for the Predators he was the second best scorer on the team with 66 points after Paul Kariya . After Paul Kariya did not renew his contract in Nashville in July 2007, Dumont took over the post of assistant captain of Paul Kariya. In the 2007/08 season he was the top scorer in the team with 29 goals and 72 points. In February 2008, Dumont signed a four-year deal ($ 4 million per year) with the Predators.
In June 2011, the Nashville Predators paid off his one-year contract early, making the Canadian available as a free agent . Around four months later, Dumont received a contract with SC Bern from the National League A until the end of the 2011/12 season .
