Jämtland in summer

Jämtland (formerly also Jemtland ) is a historical province ( Swedish landskap ) in Sweden .

geography

The province borders Norway to the west, Lapland to the north, Ångermanland to the east and Härjedalen and Medelpad to the south . The present-day province of Jämtlands län lies on its territory . Jämtland is the second largest landscape in Sweden. The landscape stretches 315 kilometers in north-south direction and the largest east-west extension is 250 kilometers. The western border is formed by the Scandinavian Mountains (Skanden), which here stretch from north to south with foothills in the south-eastern parts of Jämtland. The mountain range is interrupted by several large valleys. The highest point of Jämtland, at 1,743 meters above sea level, is in the Swedish part of the Storsylen mountain range , which rises to 1,762 meters on the Norwegian side. The lowest point of the landscape is in the eastern part just 35 meters above sea level.

Waters

At Vålådalen

About 8 percent of Jämtland's total area is taken up by waterways and two larger rivers run through the landscape, Ljungan and Indalsälven . Both have their source in the Skanden and flow in an easterly direction to the southern section of the Gulf of Bothnia . In the northern parts of Jämtland, the mountains are between 900 and 1,000 meters high. Here start some important tributaries of the Ångermanälven , which is mainly in Ångermanland . Another waterway begins its journey to the sea from the western side of the mountain range. It reaches the valley of Ströms Vattudal via the lakes Blåsjön and Kvarnbergsvattnet , from where it runs as Faxälven to its confluence with Ångermanälven.

In the central part is Sweden's fifth largest lake, Storsjön , with an area of 464 km² and an average water depth of 17.3 m.

Localities

The largest towns are Östersund , Brunflo , Krokom and Strömsund . Kallsjön , Storsjön and Ströms Vattudal are the largest lakes, Indalsälven and Ljungan the largest rivers. Especially in the west, Jämtland is characterized by numerous smaller mountains. The more important ones include Lunndörrsfjällen, Anarisfjällen and Oviksfjällen, as well as the mountains around Åre , which are known as the ski center.

history

The name Jämtland has been occupied with eatalant ( rune stone from Frösön ), Jamtaland (1257) and Iæmtæland (around 1303) since the 11th century . From the Viking Age to the Middle Ages, Jämtland was an almost independent empire that was controlled by the “ Jamtamot ”, a Ting with its own laws, until 1470 . Christianized in the 11th century, it belonged to Norway from 1178 to 1536 and, together with Norway, to Denmark from 1537 to 1645 . Between 1563 and 1677 the rulership of Jämtland changed thirteen times. In 1645 Jämtland came to Sweden through the Peace of Brömsebro .

heritage Site

In the park near Sösjön in the Sami town of Njaarke, traces of Sami settlement were found that were more than 1000 years old . The Sami used this area as a hunting ground.

language

The Jämtland was originally a particularly strong from the kingdom Swedish divergent dialect.

Regional identity

In the Jämtland fells (Vålådalen nature reserve)

For historical reasons, the cultural and linguistic ties to the Norwegian Trøndelag have always been stronger than to the surrounding Swedish provinces. Based on this, there has been an independence movement with the Republic of Jämtland since the 1960s , which however never violently advocated its goals.
