COMM

KOMMZ is a music festival that has been taking place annually since 1975 in Nilkheimer Park near Aschaffenburg . The name is derived from "communication tent camp".
It is one of the largest and oldest non-profit festivals in Germany. In addition to the three-day music program, the KOMMZ also offers theater , cabaret , a large children's program and various free courses.

history

After the social democrat Willi Reiland , who had campaigned for the young electorate with “sixty-eight” slogans, was elected Lord Mayor of Aschaffenburg in 1970, the municipal youth center of the city of Aschaffenburg could be built, which should be run by the young people in self-administration.

In 1975 the first park festival (July 12-13, 1975) was planned in the youth center. In thought of the coup in Chile in 1973 , the Chile committee organized the cultural and political content of the event. The city youth welfare office financed part of the event and made the Nilkheimer Park available, all on the condition that the requirements of the law and order were met. Through this first park festival, the KOMMZ group emerged in the communal youth center. At the beginning, the youth care department of the Aschaffenburg City Youth Welfare Office was responsible. In 1976 and 1977, the KOMMZ group members again organized a park festival, the KOMMZ, under the sponsorship of the municipal youth welfare office.

In the spring of 1978, the city of Aschaffenburg closed the municipal youth center after internal political squabbles. The youth welfare office refused to organize the festival and withdrew the KOMMZ group's financial means, although the preparations were already in full swing and contracts with music groups had already been concluded. A handful of KOMMZ members brought the fourth KOMMZ to life, the first free and independent KOMMZ, despite the almost insurmountable requirements imposed by the public order office and the police - up to a week before the start.

The KOMMZ today

Kommz area

The KOMMZ takes place once a year in the Nilkheimer Park near Aschaffenburg. In contrast to consumer-oriented events, the KOMMZ focuses on communication and togetherness. Commercial providers don't stand a chance. In this respect, concessions are only made to the cultural offerings in the form of a mature music program and now exemplary children's program. A large part of the voluntary income goes to various social institutions and aid organizations.

Due to the garbage problem, it is no longer allowed to enter the festival area with glass bottles of any kind since commz 2008. The organizers hope that this will result in a decrease in the amount of garbage and fewer broken glass on the site.

The garbage situation has been significantly relaxed thanks to the clarification on the topic of garbage that has taken place since then, as well as active and direct communication with visitors.

Occurring

The music at the KOMMZ was particularly characterized by the fact that, in addition to bands from the nationwide alternative scene, many world music and reggae bands also performed in Nilkheimer Park. In 1994, Cobra, the first Chinese women's rock band, played at the KOMMZ. Cabaret greats such as Die 3 Tornados , Sissy Perlinger , Volker Pispers and Urban Priol also celebrated great success here - for Urban Priol, the appearance in 1992 in front of almost 2000 visitors was the first major solo appearance.
