Karl Heinz Engelin





Karl Heinz Engelin (born October 17, 1924 in Memel ; † December 1, 1986 in Hamburg ) was a German sculptor .
Life
In 1942 Karl Heinz Engelin was called up for military service and completed training as a watch engineer on a submarine at the Kiel Naval School . After military service in World War II and internment , Engelin worked as a groom in Ostholstein from 1945 . In 1947 he graduated from high school in Plön Castle . He then studied art history at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and completed an apprenticeship as a stonemason until 1949 . At graduation he received two awards. He then worked at the building works at the Freiburg Minster . Engelin then studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Freiburg, where he was a master student of Wilhelm Gerstel . In 1953 he received the award from the Freiburg Academy. This was followed by a study visit to Paris , where he studied with Ossip Zadkine at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris . In 1954 he married his fellow student from Freiburg, Gisela Hommes, who from then on called herself Gisela Engelin-Hommes and began studying at the Landeskunstschule Hamburg with Edwin Scharff . The following year he worked as a bronze caster at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart , under the guidance of H. Heinzel. From 1959 Engelin and his wife Gisela Engelin-Hommes had a joint studio in Hamburg at Hansaplatz 14. With her he had a daughter and two sons. From 1963 to 1970 he completed additional training in bronze casting, melting and welding processes for stainless steel . In 1980 he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon .
Engelin produced, among other things, over 40 orders in Hamburg as art in buildings or as art in public spaces . He mainly created figurative sculptures, but also turned to abstract sculptures. Among other things, he is with works in the collections of the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg, the city of Stuttgart , the State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Schleswig, the Ohm Foundation in Hamburg, the Hotel Grand Elysée ( Block Collection ) in Hamburg, the Authority for Culture and Media represented in Hamburg, the SAGA group of companies and the Hamburger Sparkasse .
Engelin was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery (west of the tomb open-air museum Heckengarten ). His sculpture Der Loafenzer was carved into the gravestone as a relief by his wife.
