Kitui County (until 2010 Kitui District ) is a county in Kenya . The capital is Kitui . In 2019, 1,136,187 people lived in the county on 24,385.1 km². The county is divided into ten divisions: Central, Chuluni, Matinyani, Mwitika, Mutitu, Ikutha, Yatta, Mutongoni, Mutomo, and Mutha. The county's climate is semi-arid , 40% of the county's area is considered to be agriculturally usable, and only 1% is covered with forest.

75% of the population lives from agriculture, in 2005 69% of the people in Kitui County lived below the poverty line. The population lives from cattle breeding, mainly cattle, sheep and goats are raised. A smaller part of the population lives from poultry farming and beekeeping . Mainly maize, beans, sorghum , broad beans , millet and cassava are grown on the agricultural land for personal use . For trade are cotton , tobacco , mangoes , bananas , sweet potatoes , eggplant , okra and spinach grown.

Infrastructure

In 2002 the county had 75 km of asphalt roads, almost 270 km of the road network were gravel, the rest consists of dirt roads that sometimes become impassable during the rainy season. In 2002 there were 66 telephone booths and 16 post offices in the district, as well as eleven financial institutions. Outside the capital Kitui there is no access to electricity, the energy needs are mainly met by wood and coal. Almost 90% of households in the region have no direct access to clean water.

Healthcare

Kitui County has a total of 92 health care facilities, including four hospitals and five retirement homes. The largest of the hospitals, Kitui County Hospital has 200 beds. The county's infant mortality rate is high, with 9.8% of children dying before their 5th birthday. The doctor-patient ratio is 1: 16,000. The HIV / AIDS - incidence is 14%.
