Kwangchul Youn (* 1966 in Cheongju , South Korea ) is a Korean opera singer ( bass ).

Youth and education

Kwangchul Youn was born in South Korea to parents who made a living from farming. He grew up without electricity until he was twelve and first attended a vocational school . At the age of seventeen he noticed the extraordinary richness of his voice and began to sing as a bass in a church choir . His parents then sent him to Cheongju University, where he began his education.

In 1988 he made his debut at the State Opera in Seoul as de Sirieux in Fedora . As a guest he sang the roles of Basilio in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia , Loredano in Verdi's I due Foscari and Dulcamara in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore at other Korean houses .

He continued his studies in 1990/91 at the Sofia Music Academy with Lesa Koleva and from 1991 to 1993 at the Berlin University of the Arts with Herbert Brauer. During this time he received several awards in national and international competitions. One of the most important for him was the 1st prize in 1993 at the “Concours International des Voix d'Opéra Plácido Domingo” Operalia in Paris. Since then he has appeared again and again with Plácido Domingo , for example in autumn 2009 at the State Opera Unter den Linden , Berlin , as Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra and at his 40th stage anniversary at Milan's Teatro alla Scala , as Hunding in a concert performance of Walküre .

Professional background

In 1993/94 he sang the roles of Sarastro ( Die Zauberflöte ) and Komtur ( Don Giovanni ) at the Leipzig Opera . In 1994 there was an audition at the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin, which led to a contract as a member of the ensemble . He held this position until 2004 and is still a frequent guest there today. Among other things, he interpreted the king in Aida , the minister in Fidelio , King Marke ( Tristan and Isolde ), Bertram ( Robert le diable ), Colline ( La Bohème ) and Lodovico ( Otello ).

This was followed by engagements at the Paris Opéra Bastille (Simon Boccanegra) and at the Théâtre du Châtelet ( Elektra , Fidelio ) and at the Barcelona Opera ( Le nozze di Figaro , Don Giovanni , Tristan and Isolde ).

In 1996 he made his Bayreuth debut as a night watchman in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg . There he sang in new productions: in 2002 the Landgrafen im Tannhäuser , 2004 Titurel in Parsifal and 2005 König Marke in Tristan and Isolde, 2006 Fasolt in Das Rheingold and Hunding in Die Walküre. In addition, she made her role debut as Gurnemanz in Parsifal in 2008 - a new production by Stefan Herheim .

Under the direction of Daniele Gatti he sang Gurnemanz in a concert performance in the Frauenkirche in Dresden. In 2011 Kwangchul Youn could also be heard in this role at the Teatro Regio di Torino , the Paris Théâtre des Champs-Élysées , the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and the Hamburg State Opera . On the 60th stage anniversary of Daniel Barenboim he took part in performances of Verdi's Aida and Messa da Requiem at the Teatro Colón Buenos Aires from August 29 to 31, 2010 .

He has been with the Frankfurt Opera since 2007 , where he sang the role of Philip II in Don Carlo . He is also in Bilbao, at the Teatro Real in Madrid, in Valencia, at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona , at the Vienna State Opera (Mephisto in Faust ), at the Metropolitan Opera (König Marke in Tristan and Isolde , Ferrando in Il trovatore , Commander in Don Giovanni ), the Washington National Opera and the London Royal Opera House (King Heinrich in Lohengrin ).

In addition to his operatic activities, Kwangchul Youn also appears as a concert singer at the Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome as well as at the Wiener Musikverein , the Wiener Konzerthaus (e.g. in March 2010 in the 8th Symphony by Gustav Mahler ) and with the Salzburg band Easter Festival . In the Berliner Philharmonie he could be heard in the Requien by Mozart and Verdi, in the Nelson Mass by Haydn and in Beethoven's Missa solemnis .

He held recitals with his piano partner Helmut Oertel, such as B. in summer 2007 in the margravial opera house in Bayreuth and in autumn 2007 in the Frankfurt opera. In December 2009 there was a performance of Winterreise with Myung-Whun Chung on the piano at the Art Center, Seoul . He regularly sings the bass part in Beethoven's ninth symphony at the New Year's Eve concerts in the Konzerthaus in Berlin .

He worked with conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann , Mark Minkowski , Fabio Luisi , Michael Gielen , Myung-Whun Chung, Zubin Mehta , James Levine , Horst Stein and Thomas Hengelbrock in operas and concerts as well as in CD productions, e.g. B. in the Meistersinger recording of the Bayreuth Festival under Daniel Barenboim with Teldec or with the label harmonia mundi ( La Didone , Croesus ).

The recordings of the operas Le nozze di Figaro , Così fan tutte , Tiefland and Don Giovanni were made under Bertrand de Billy and were published by Arte Nova. Opus Arte has released a DVD of the controversial Don Giovanni production by Calixto Bieitos from the Gran Teatro del Liceu, Barcelona, ​​under Bertrand de Billy with Kwangchul Youn as Leporello. The DVD of the Rheingold with Kwangchul Youn as Fasolt (director: Harry Kupfer ) also comes from Barcelona .

Gounod's Faust was also recorded with Bertrand de Billy in 2009 at the Vienna State Opera (Orfeo). The Decca label's Daphne production under Semjon Bychkov was nominated for the best opera production at the 2006 Grammy Awards . In 2009 a SACD of Lohengrin , created under the direction of Semyon Bychkov, came out as a WDR production at Profil Medien . Since 2010 he has been a professor at the College of Music at Seoul National University .
