The 800-meter run for women at the 1974 European Athletics Championships was held from September 2 to 4, 1974 in the Olympic Stadium in Rome .

The Bulgarian Liljana Tomowa became European champion . Second place went to the Olympic third over 800 meters / Olympic second over 1500 meters from 1972 and Vice European Champion from 1971 over 1500 meters Gunhild Hoffmeister , who won the European Championship over 1500 meters four days later . Bronze went to the Romanian Mariana Suman.

Record improvement
