The list of countries by urbanization sorts countries according to the proportion of the population in urban areas ( urbanization rate ). The definition of urban areas comes from the World Urbanization Prospects of the United Nations and is mostly based on national statistics. In general, an agglomeration of more than 10,000 inhabitants is considered urban. In 2018, 55.3% of the world's population lived in cities. The rate of urbanization can be an indicator of a country's industrialization .
