List of districts of Frankfurt am Main
The list of districts of Frankfurt am Main includes the 46 districts of the city of Frankfurt am Main . The population figures refer to the statistics of the Citizens' Office Statistics and Elections as of December 31, 2019 according to the respective main residence . As of the reporting date, the population register recorded a total of 758,574 inhabitants.
For statistical purposes, the urban area of Frankfurt am Main is divided into 46 districts, numbered from 1 to 22 and 24 to 47. According to the name, however, there are only 43 districts, as three populous districts (Nordend, Sachsenhausen and Westend) are again divided into east and west or north and south. The districts 1 to 11 as well as Sachsenhausen (13/14) and parts of the airport (15) are located on the territory that has belonged to the imperial city of Frankfurt am Main since the Middle Ages . Most of the other parts of the city emerged from the demarcations of former villages and towns, which before 1866 belonged only partially to Frankfurt and were gradually incorporated from 1877 until 1976. Most of the time, the historic town centers are still clearly visible. The districts of Dornbusch, Frankfurter Berg and Riederwald were spun off from other districts in the 20th century. They consist of settlements that arose on former agricultural land.
The districts have no administrative or political function. In contrast, the 16 local districts and 124 city districts are regulated by municipal statutes . The assignment of districts to local districts is not clear: One of the districts of Bockenheim and Praunheim belongs to a different local district than the rest of the district.
The table describes the development of the Frankfurt city area since the annexation of the Free City of Frankfurt by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866. The earlier development since the Middle Ages is shown in the article on the Free City of Frankfurt in the " Territory " section.
