Lochau is a part of the municipality of Eckersdorf in the Bayreuth district in Upper Franconia ( Bavaria ).

geography

The hamlet lies on the open ground in the west of the municipality. A brook rises to the south and flows into the Eschenbach from the right, a right tributary of the Seitenbach . The Burgstall hill ( 535  m above sea level ) is 0.8 km to the southwest . A residential path leads to the federal road 22 (0.25 km north) between Busbach (0.8 km north-west) and Eschen (2.2 km north-east). There is a tree there that has been designated a natural monument .

history

Older documented mentions of the hamlet are missing. According to C. Schimpf, it is a spin-off from Lochau (Thurnau) , which has existed since the 12th century and is located approx. 3.5 km north of the village. In 1801 the place was mentioned in the geographic statistical-topographical lexicon of Franconia as "Lüchauthal", probably an adaptation to the lords of Lüchau who once lived in Eckersdorf . In 1852 a liquidation plan mentions “Lochau on the Eschen”, the addition probably serving to distinguish it from the other Lochau.

The place name is made up of Middle High German lôh, lôch (bushes, forest) and ouwe (water country).

As a result of the municipal edict, Lochau was assigned to the tax district and the rural municipality of Busbach in 1811 , which was incorporated into the municipality of Eckersdorf on May 1, 1978 as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .
