Lochau is a district of the Thurnau market in the Kulmbach district .

The Lochau rises east of the village . The place is located on a high plateau, mostly surrounded by arable land and grassland. In the north-east are the wooded hills Wachhügel ( 580  m above sea level ) and Sattelberg ( 569  m above sea level ). On the guard hill there is a 69-meter-high Deutsche Telekom telecommunications tower , which is designed as a free-standing steel framework. A communal road leads to Neustädtlein am Forst on district road BT 16 (2.5 km east) or on district road KU 7 (1.5 km north-west) between Alladorf in the south and Tannfeld in the north.

The place was first mentioned in 1388 as "Lochein". In 1402 the place was called "Lochen" and in 1433 "Lochaw". The place name is derived from an identical field name . The final word is lōch ( mhd.
