history

The place was first mentioned in 1356 as "Lesein". In 1421 the place was called "Lessen", in 1526 "Lesaw". The place name is based on the noun leština ( Slav for hazelnut bushes). Later on, place names of neighboring settlements ending in -au were adjusted.

Towards the end of the 18th century, Leesau consisted of 11 properties. The high court as well as the village and community rulership exercised the Giech'sche Amt Thurnau . The landlords were the Thurnau office (2 courtyards, 2 half-yards, 4 Sölden , 1 little house, 1 drip house ) and the Thurnau parish (1 Söldengut), whereby the Thurnau office was responsible for tax and bailiff justice.

From 1797 to 1808 the place was under the patrimonial court of Thurnau . With the community edict, Leesau was assigned to the Hutschdorf tax district in 1811 and the Hutschdorf rural community in 1812 . With the second community edict (1818), Leesau was re-incorporated into the newly formed rural community Menchau . On January 1, 1973, Leesau was incorporated into the Thurnau market as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .

The Bamberg malt factory Michael Weyermann has a warehouse in Leesau .
