The marriage between Charlotte and Sam Cooper is not going well. After the children are out of the house, there is little they share. But the two aren't the only ones who have their problems. Now Christmas is just around the corner and everyone wants to keep their problems a secret from the others so as not to spoil the Christmas mood.
Her son Hank has just been fired and he is hiding his unemployment because he does not want to be seen as a "loser" after his divorce. Eleanor, his sister, gets on the nerves of being asked every year why she is still single, so she brought Joe, a soldier she happened to meet at the airport, to introduce him as her boyfriend.
Charlotte's father Bucky would rather spend Christmas in his local pub and has brought the young waitress Ruby with him, who knows nothing about her life. Emma, Charlotte's sister, suffers from an inferiority complex towards Charlotte and is caught shoplifting.
Family secrets come to light at Christmas. The story is told from the perspective of the family dog Rags.
