KK Madhouse ( Japanese 株式会社 マ ッ ド ハ ウ ス , Kabushiki-gaisha Maddohausu ) is a Japanese animation studio.

It was founded in 1972 by former employees of the Mushi Productions studio , including Masao Maruyama , Osamu Dezaki , Rintarō and Yoshiaki Kawajiri . The studio's name also comes from the former two: M aruyama A nd D ezaki. In 2004 the corporate form changed to a joint stock company ( Kabushiki-gaisha ).

Madhouse has produced many popular television series. 1973 started the studio in cooperation with Tokyo Movie Shinsha with Ace o Nerae! and later produced successful series such as Ninja Scroll , Trigun and Di Gi Charat outside of Japan . At the end of the 1980s, the studio also began producing OVAs , but the focus remained on the production of television series and movies.

Work in the cinema industry ranges from working on the film adaptations of Barefoot by Hiroshima to the anime implementation of the science fiction series Lensman by EE Smith to the production of Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis . Madhouse produced Satoshi Kons films Perfect Blue , Millennium Actress , Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika as well as Tokyo Babylon , two films for X 1999 , Card Captor Sakura and Chobits by CLAMP .

The mangaka Naoki Urasawa is closely associated with the studio, which has three of his works, Yawara! , Filmed Master Keaton and Monster .
