Manfred Weiss (composer)

Manfred Weiss (born February 12, 1935 in Niesky ) is a German composer .

Life

Manfred Weiss was born in Upper Lusatia . He grew up in a missionary family of the Moravian Brethren and since childhood received violin lessons in Niesky and piano lessons in Görlitz. He also sang in the church choir and played organ music . At the age of twelve he composed his first pieces.

After graduating from high school, he studied composition with Hans Stieber and music theory with Franz von Glasenapp at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Halle / Saale from 1952 to 1955 . The minor subjects were piano and viola . From 1955 to 1957 he studied composition with Rudolf Wagner-Régeny and music theory with Ruth Zechlin (harmony) and Jürgen Wilbrandt (counterpoint) at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin . In 1957 he passed his state examination. His criticism of the state on the uprising of June 17, 1953, prevented him from studying in Berlin. From 1957 to 1959 he was instead a master student of composition with Rudolf Wagner-Régeny at the Academy of Arts in Berlin (East). He received further suggestions from Paul Dessau .

In 1959, on the recommendation of Fritz Reuter, he became a lecturer and in 1983 professor (from 1991 full professor) for composition and music theory at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden . From 1991 to 1997 he was the prorector of the music academy and played a leading role in its modernization. He has been retired since 1998. Weiss is a member of the Saxon Music Association .

He composed more than 100 works for orchestral, chamber and choral music as well as songs. Orchestras such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra , the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden , the Dresden Philharmonic and the Dresden Kreuzchor performed his compositions. Conductors were u. a. Herbert Blomstedt , Kurt Masur , Herbert Kegel , Roderich Kreile and Lothar Zagrosek . The soloists included the pianist Amadeus Webersinke , the organist Michael Schönheit and the singer Günther Leib .
