The Church of the Birth of Mary and St. Terentius is a Catholic parish church in the Saarland city of Ottweiler , Neunkirchen district . It bears the patronage of the birth of Mary , mother of Jesus Christ . In the list of monuments of the Saarland the church building is a single monument listed.

history

In 1680 the predecessor of today's church was built.

Today's house of worship was built between 1832 and 1834, although the architecture is controversial in the specialist literature . Either master builder Leonhard ( Saarbrücken ) or Karl Friedrich Schinkel ( Berlin ) designed the plans for the church building . Stones from the old church, so-called "transfer stones", were built into the masonry of the new church, which were supposed to carry the good spirit of the old church into the new house.

In 1842 the tower and roof were restored , which was carried out again in 1852. In 1850 the patronage was expanded to include St. Terentius. In 1860–61 the tower was rebuilt as a wooden structure , while the gallery inside was widened. In 1864 the floor was restored.

Restoration and reconstruction measures according to plans by the architect Ernst Brand ( Trier ) in the years 1897–98 concerned the entrance door and the pews . In addition, the choir was expanded , a vestibule , electrical lighting and two confessionals were built into the wall, and a new wooden floor was laid. The local construction management was the responsibility of the architect Krumpen (Ottweiler), the construction company of the architect Krumpen was responsible for the execution.

In 1900 6 buttresses were built to reinforce an extension, in 1902 the masonry of the church was restored, in 1906 a warm air heating system and a communion bench made of marble were installed, and the church windows were painted and restored . In 1909, a mechanical tower clock from Mannhardt ( Munich ) was installed, which remained in the tower until 1970. 1930–31 the church roof was subjected to another restoration and the interior was repainted. In 1936 the church was expanded with the construction of a large sacristy . In the 1950s, the painting and the windows were restored. In 1970, under the direction of the architect Rudolf Birtel ( Neunkirchen ) in collaboration with the artist Ferdinand Selgrad , restoration and reconstruction work was carried out in the chancel and a spiral staircase to the gallery was installed. In 1983, an electric, fully automatic tower clock was installed by the Werner Marx ( Bliesen ) company, donated by an unnamed donor. A new exterior and interior painting was applied in 1984. In 2008 the main portal received a new staircase and a new entrance door.

On December 28, 2011, a fire in the church interior caused property damage of well over 100,000 euros.

Furnishing

The church's furnishings include the baptismal font from 1864, a foundation of the "Marian League" of the girls of the parish, which was installed in the former Sacred Heart Chapel in 1970, the St. Mary's altar on the left with the wooden statue of Mary and the terracotta statues St. Mechthild and St. Barbara , the Joseph altar on the right with the terracotta statue of St. Joseph and the wooden statues of St. John the Baptist and St. Terentius, the " Mater dolorosa ", a way of the cross from the staircase to the gallery 1906 (the previous Way of the Cross from 1864 was donated to the new church in Münchwies in 1906 ). The two side altars were removed when the choir was expanded in 1936 and rebuilt in a simplified form on the side end walls. The Altar of Mary on the left shows a wooden statue of the Madonna in a halo, surrounded by roses, the Altar of St. Joseph on the right by sculptor Otto Straub (Munich) from 1952 shows a statue of St. Joseph with lilies.

In the chancel there is a cast bronze ambo from 1970, a new tabernacle from 1970 from Lazlo Deli (Neunkirchen) and an altar from Menzel (Ottweiler) from 1970 with a marble base and table, the pillars come from the former communion bench . The canopy above the tabernacle dates from 1974. Glass painter and mosaic artist Ferdinand Selgrad (Spiesen-Elversberg) was responsible for the design of the chancel in 1970 in collaboration with the architect Rudolf Birtel (Neunkirchen).

The five choir windows come from the Hertel & Lersch company ( Düsseldorf ) and were created in the years 1896–97. They show the Annunciation, the birth, the death on the cross, the resurrection and the second coming of Jesus. The sixth window on the right-hand side is glazed with slug panes.
The 10 windows of the nave were provided with cathedral glass during the restoration in 1906 . In 1970 a restoration was carried out by the Binsfeld (Trier) company, which also double-glazed the windows in 1981. Seven windows of the church are decorated with stained glass from 1936. The 14 windows in the large sacristy from 1936 mainly show saints who are the patron saints of the subsidiary churches .

The oak confessionals from 1960 to 1962 were made by the sculptor Mettler (Morbach).

The painting from 1931 was done by Alfred Gottwald ( Bonn ).
