The club was founded in 1956 as Stroitel Tscherepowez . As early as 1969 the name was changed to Metallurg Tscherepowez and most recently in 1994 to Severstal Tscherepowez , after the main sponsor of the steel company Severstal .

The only success in the club's history was winning the championship of the Pervaya League in 1981, before advancing to the top Russian league at the beginning of the 1990s. There the team established itself over the years in the super league and, after a third place in the 2000/01 season, reached the runner-up title at the end of the 2002/03 season.

For the 2008/09 season Sewerstal was included in the newly founded Continental Hockey League and missed the play-offs in the first two seasons. In the following three game years, the club reached the play-offs, but were eliminated in the last sixteen or quarter-finals. In the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons, the club was again unable to qualify for the play-offs.
