Michael Daniel Chukwuma Umeh (born September 18, 1984 in Houston , Texas ) is an American - Nigerian basketball player who grew up in the United States . After studying in his native country, he played as a professional for two years with the Gießen 46ers in the German basketball league and later just under one season for the Braunschweig Phantoms, interrupted by two years in the second Spanish league LEB Oro . Umeh then played alternately in Italy and Israel , where he was most recently active for Ironi Naharija in the Ligat ha'Al . Umeh won the African Championship in 2015 with the Nigerian national team and participated in the 2016 Olympic Games .

Career

Umeh went to study at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas , where he played from 2003 for the college team Runnin 'Rebels in the Mountain West Conference (MWC) of the NCAA . In his senior season for the Rebels, Umeh won the MWC championship tournament with the team in 2007 and qualified with her for the first time after a seven-year break for the national NCAA finals , which the Rebels won in 1990. When they returned to the finals, they reached the round of sixteen Sweet Sixteen in 2007 , in which they were eliminated against the Ducks of the University of Oregon .

After completing his studies in 2007, Umeh signed a contract with the Gießen 46ers from the German BBL. The season was not very successful in terms of sport for the club and it was only just possible to avoid relegation with 16th place. Umeh's contract was extended, but there was no sporting success. So at the end of the 2008/09 season they were ranked one rank lower and were thus relegated in terms of sport. Like a season before the TBB Trier , the Giessen could only secure their first division stay by purchasing a first division license that had become free as a wildcard . Umeh, however, left the club for Spain and played there in the second division LEB Oro with the first division relegated from Menorca . With a victory in the play-offs of the LEB one could achieve the promotion for the club. Umeh himself switched to the first division relegated from Murcia for the new season . By taking first place after the main round you achieved direct promotion. Umeh also rose to the first division this time, but moved to the new league competitor from Valladolid for the 2011/12 season. In Valladolid he could not prevail and then moved to the German first division club NewYorker Phantoms in mid-December 2011. As seventh in the main round of the basketball Bundesliga 2011/12, the Phantoms reached the play-offs for the German championship for the third time in a row , in which they were defeated without a win in the first round by later runner-up ratiopharm Ulm .

In 2012 Umeh moved this time to the second Italian league LegADue for newcomer Aquila Basket from Trento . This won the league cup of the second Italian division and was eliminated in the first play-off round for promotion. Umeh then moved to the Israeli Ligat ha'Al to Bnei haScharon from Herzlia , which only reached the penultimate place in the table at the end of the season. Umeh joined end April 2014 have returned to Italy, where he end of the season for Enel New Basket of Brindisi in the top division Lega Basket Serie A denied. In six missions Umeh could not prevent the team from Brindisi, finishing fifth in the main round, in their historically first play-off participation for the Italian championship already in the first round without a win. Then Umeh went back to the second Italian division, which was now known as A2 Gold , and played in Verona for the former Korać Cup title winner Scaligera Basket Tezenis. With this team Umeh again won the league cup of the second division, where Umeh was awarded the title MVP of the final. As the first in the main round, Verona missed the return to the top division against eighth Fortitudo Agrigento in the first play-off round for promotion. Umeh then went back to Israel, where he returned to the play-offs with Ironi from Nahariya after the team improved from tenth of the preseason to fourth place. In the play-offs, however, the team lost to Hapoel Eilat , who were led by Umeh's compatriot Alade Aminu , the brother of NBA professional Al-Farouq Aminu . Umeh then took part in the Olympic Games for the first time with Alade Aminu.

National team

At the African Cup of Nations 2009 in Libya Umeh scored 4.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists for the Nigerian national basketball team in an average of 13 minutes of playing time. After a successful preliminary and intermediate round with only one defeat against the series African champions Angola , the team was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Cameroon and ended up in 5th place in the tournament.

At the following African Cup of Nations in 2011 in Antananarivo they reached third place after they had to admit defeat to Angola again in the semi-finals. In the game for the bronze medal you defeated the national team of Ivory Coast . For the Olympic qualification tournament Umeh was ousted from the squad by former Bundesliga players Tony Skinn and Ade Dagunduro, among others . While the national team qualified for the 2012 Olympic tournament in London and was eliminated in the first group stage after just one victory over their African competitor Tunisia , Umeh was only a spectator at the Olympic Games.

Umeh was back in the Nigerian squad at the 2015 African Cup of Nations. In Radès , the selection only lost in the preliminary round to hosts Tunisia, who had interrupted the Angolans' series of titles four years earlier, and finally won the final against defending champions Angola. Nigeria was again qualified for the Olympic Games. This time Umeh was also able to be there and at the 2016 Olympic basketball tournament in Rio, the team scored a victory against Croatia in five preliminary round games , but did not get past the last group place and was eliminated again early. Umeh was the best template provider and second best point collector for his own selection.
