The film critics' association was able to present the Oscar winner 13 times in advance , most recently in 2006, when it was awarded to the American Martin Scorsese ( Departed - Unter Feinden ). In 2012, Kathryn Bigelow ( Zero Dark Thirty ) was the first filmmaker to be honored. It was followed by the victory of Greta Gerwig ( Lady Bird ) in 2017 .
