On top of it, it's snowing is a German TV film by director Vivian Naefe from 2012 . The tragicomic Christmas film is a literary adaptation of the book of the same name by the author Astrid Ruppert , which was published in 2008 by Ullstein Verlag . It is about the pre-Christmas needs and expectations of the neighbors of a Munich apartment building , the residents of which unexpectedly gather for a party on Christmas Eve after a pastor, played by Wotan Wilke Möhring , fell in front of their doorstep shortly before his sermon.

The ZDF commissioned production was realized by Hager Moss Film and shot between December 2011 and February 2012 in Munich and the surrounding area. The cast of the ensemble film include Diana Amft , Gisela Schneeberger , August Zirner , Fred Stillkrauth and Bibiane Zeller to see. When it was first broadcast on December 17, 2012 on ZDF, the production received mostly positive reviews and became one of the most successful television films of the year. In September 2016, What in Life Counts was a loose sequel to the film.

action

Around December 23rd and 24th, people in a Munich apartment building will be confronted with various problems: While Miriam Kirsch has to confess to her daughter Julchen that she will have to celebrate Christmas without her dad for the first time because her parents have just separated, the freshly qualified pastor Gregor Thaler is under pressure to replace a colleague at short notice and to prepare the sermon for the Christmas mass. Meanwhile, after 35 years of marriage, the couple Achim and Waltraud Henning plunge the preparations for the holiday into a serious crisis when Achim forgets to get the Christmas goose and Waltraud's plans thwart the bill.

In view of his pubescent daughter Nina, the single father Michael gives up all efforts to make the festive season contemplative. The attempt of the young couple Isabell and Nick to make the first Christmas together as alternative as possible also fails and ends in pieces and arguments. Meanwhile, widower and caretaker Eberling is reconciled with his fate and prepares for a lonely Christmas in front of the television. Neighbor Rosa Wagner regrets that she has to spend Christmas Eve again on her own after the death of her daughter and husband.

When Pastor Gregor falls unhappy while declaiming his sermon on the snow-covered street, the residents of the tenement house bring him to Miriam's splendidly decorated apartment. Mother and daughter spontaneously invite all residents to Christmas, while Gregor waits horizontally for the emergency doctor. After initial arguments, the reconciliation of the house residents can no longer be stopped. Later, the Hennings' children also arrive, who cannot believe they can find their parents celebrating in a neighboring apartment. Rosa is happy about the Christmas party with all the neighbors. She falls asleep peacefully, and the ambulance who was supposed to help the pastor can only determine her death.

With Rosa's death, Christmas comes to a quick end. Gregor has to leave for Christmas mass after his emergency medical treatment and is accompanied by Miriam and Waltraud, who sing in the choir , as well as almost all of the remaining neighbors. He breaks away from his laboriously drafted sermon and spontaneously gives the congregation a free sermon in which he speaks about his experiences and impressions on Christmas Eve. When it is finally the choir's turn, Miriam overrides the conductor and begins to sing the song " Fix You " by Coldplay , which Gregor originally wanted for the service . While caretaker Eberling is reconciling himself with his daughter at his wife's grave, the residents of the tenement house come back to their apartments after the service to give presents. Gregor decides to end the evening with a visit to Miriam and Julchen.

background

The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz in Munich served as a filming location, among other things.

On top of that, it's snowing based on the debut novel of the same name by film producer and writer Astrid Ruppert , which was published in 2008 by Ullstein Verlag . The title of the book is borrowed from a line of verse from the children's poem Die Drei Spatzen by poet Christian Morgenstern , which Julchen recites to her mother Miriam both in the book and in the film.

Ruppert wrote the script for the film himself. Obendrüber was produced when it was snowing on behalf of ZDF by Hager Moss Film. Kirsten Hager appeared as a producer . The ZDF editorial team was Karina Ulitzsch. The film was shot in two stages between December 6 and 14, 2011 and February 7 to 19, 2012 in Munich and the surrounding area. The motifs included the Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz , Odeonsplatz , the Viktualienmarkt in Munich's old town , the Old South Cemetery and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer , the oldest Evangelical parish church in Schwabing .

The music for the film was composed by Sebastian Pille . The Christmas carols that are played in the course of the film include, among others, Dean Martin's interpretation of " Let It Snow ", Charles Brown's "Please Come Home for Christmas", Bing Crosby's " Jingle Bells ", Rosemary Clooney's " White Christmas " and " Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas ”by Michael Bublé . The singing voice of leading actress Diana Amft in the songs “ Gloria in excelsis Deo ”, “Jingle Bells”, “ Silent Night, Holy Night ” and Coldplay'sFix You ” is that of a studio singer.

criticism

"What everyone in charge from Obendrüber because it is snowing has delivered with this impressive production is simply one of the most beautiful Christmas films of the last few years," said Antje Wessels fromquote meter . “Anything that ailments heartless productions that want to tell the same schema over and over again is in vain. A Christmas story reveals itself that addresses feelings in an honest way, uses melancholy as a stylistic device that releases hope and knows how to entertain with a thoroughly coherent ensemble and lots of surprises in such a way that it is almost a shame that it is Strip probably only makes it into the television program at Christmas ”.

The cast around Gisela Schneeberger received positive reviews for their game.

Titus Arnu from the Süddeutsche Zeitung found the film to come with tried and tested patterns and wrote: “Vivian Naefe stages her Christmas film with subtle tragedy, quiet nuances and muted background music. The director mixes a punch that is pretty transparent, but not too sweet. If you learn something from history, it is this: The expectations for Christmas shouldn't be too high, then the festival will be more bearable. The same thing with expectations applies to this film. In the end you are back at Sartre: Unfortunately there is again too little laughing ”.

TV critic Rainer Tittelbach from Tittelbach.tv found that on top of that it is snowing “not only picks up viewers with their sentimental Christmas moods”, but also formulates “situations with high recognition value”. Naefe staged the Christmas film "with a top ensemble", which "wants to be more than a wrist warmer , who visibly wants to go to the heart and culminates in a Frank Capra- like sermon at the end , a modern Christmas mass including a Coldplay finale". TV Spielfilm described the film as "a bit transparent, but not too sweet" and judged that Naefe "skilfully joins the party with quiet humor, quiet tragedy, a large ensemble and lots of emotions [...]."

Teleschau reviewer Teresa Groß found that Naefe “attaches great importance to details in her Christmas episode film” and thus made “an atmospheric, family-friendly Monday film”. The episodes are "well observed [and] entangled". The “Christian idea of the festival” comes across, so it snows “closer than most other Christmas films, despite the banal title”. The Prisma editorial team criticized the fact that on top of that, when it snows “despite a very prominent cast and very good performance”, it is merely “a rather flat and sentimental Christmas story with clichéd character drawings and a predictable happy ending”. The lexicon of international films described the production as "an emotional (television) Christmas film and disappointments, hopes and expectations that sometimes have unexpected consequences".

success

On top of that, because it is snowing, was broadcast for the first time on December 17, 2012 at prime time on ZDF . With an average of 6.89 million viewers and a market share of 21 percent , the film became the most-watched television production of the day and one of the most successful television films of the year. In the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49 year olds, the feature film again had a 13.7 percent market share. The film has been broadcast annually since then. In 2013, an above-average 4.22 million viewers tuned into prime time.
