Objection (Tango) ( Eng .: "Einspruch (Tango)") is a song by the Colombian singer Shakira . The song was released on August 27, 2002 as the third single from Shakira's album Laundry Service . A Spanish language version called Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango) was also recorded.

Emergence

In 1998 Shakira released her second studio album ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? , which was very successful in Latin America and received several platinum awards. The album was also successful in the Billboard Latin Album Charts in the United States and served Shakira as a door opener into the US music market. The song Ojos Así included on the album also became a hit and is considered the album's signature song . Gloria Estefan , wife of Shakira's manager at the time, Emilio Estefan, suggested that Shakira translate the song Ojos Así into English . After Estefan had shown her that some of her songs could be translated well into English, Shakira learned the foreign language herself and translated Ojos Así himself. When she was finished, she showed her design to Estefan, who replied: "To be honest, I couldn't have done this better myself". Then Shakira continued to learn English with the help of a private tutor, she also went to a farm in Uruguay for two years to improve writing and recording in English. After studying the lyrics of Bob Dylan and the poetry of Walt Whitman , Shakira began to write her own English-language songs "with a dictionary in one hand and a thesaurus in the other." Objection (Tango) was the first song Shakira completed in English. She wrote the lyrics and the music for the song at the same time. She also recorded a Spanish-language version of the song entitled Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango) . The single CD from Objection (Tango) , which also includes Shakira's previous single Underneath Your Clothes , was released on August 27, 2002.

composition

Objection (Tango) was written and produced by Shakira, arrangers were Shakira and Lester Mendez, and the backing vocals were done by Shakira and Rita Quintero. The song combines pop music and rock music with tango . The song, composed in two-half time and in B minor , has a tempo of 66 beats per minute . Shakira's vocal range is from E3 to B4. The instrumentation consists of bandoneon , drums , piano , keyboard , bass , double bass , percussion and guitar .

Objection (Tango) is built in a classic verse - chorus form, with a bridge built in between the second and third choruses . In terms of content, the song deals with an angry woman who commands her love to choose between her and another woman. In the bridge, which is presented in chant , she orders her lover to end the love triangle with the line of text “Tango is not for three, was never meant to be” (“Tango is not for three people and was never meant for it”) .

Reviews

Objection (Tango) received mostly positive reviews. Kai Kopp from Laut.de won over the instrumentation: “Shakira is most convincing when her geographical and biographical origin [...] is also musically clear. Heard at the use [...] of the Bandoneon in Objection ”. For Alex Henderson from Allmusic "Shakira successfully combines pop-rock with tango". Matt Cibula of PopMatters thinks objection (tango) is “beautiful rock music craft with drama and a sense of humor”.

Music video

The music video for Objection (Tango) was shot by Dave Meyers , the choreography was done by Tina Landon. At the beginning of the music video, Shakira dances tango with her lover, then her lover leaves, the music starts and Shakira starts dancing. Shakira drives to a club where she meets her ex-lover, who is dancing with another woman, played by Tabitha Taylor. This is followed by animated comic scenes that show Shakira fighting against her unfaithful friend and the other woman. After defeating them both, the animation ends and it is shown that the fight only happened in Shakira's mind. When she attacks both in reality, she is quickly defeated by both and falls on a glass table. Two men disguised as superheroes help her and defeat her ex while Shakira defeats the other woman. As of February 2017, the video had been viewed over 124 million times on YouTube .
