At the XVII. At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , a football competition was held. Yugoslavia reached the final for the fourth time in a row and won for the first time after three defeats. For Germany, a German selection took part, which was able to prevail in an internal German elimination against the team from the GDR. In the qualification for the group stage, which was carried out for the first time at the Olympic football tournament, the Germans failed against Poland. For the first time, the preliminary round was played in the form of a group stage with four groups of four teams. In contrast to the mode used in World Cup tournaments, however, the knockout round in this tournament began with the semi-finals; a quarter-final was not played, so that only the winners of the four preliminary round groups could qualify. In addition to Rome, the venues were the Stadio Olimpico , where only the final took place, and the Stadio Flaminio , Florence , Grosseto , L'Aquila , Livorno , Naples and Pescara .
Host Italy could not use the home bonus and only finished fourth.
Denmark's silver medal was overshadowed by an airplane accident: on the way to a preparation game for the tournament, eight players, including three already nominated for the Olympic tournament, fell to their deaths with a De Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide shortly after the start in Copenhagen .
