The men's discus throw at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich was played on September 1 and 2, 1972 in the Munich Olympic Stadium. 29 athletes took part.
The Czechoslovak Ludvík Daněk became Olympic champion . The silver medal went to the American Jay Silvester , bronze went to the Swede Ricky Bruch .
Three athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany - officially Germany - started, all of whom failed in the qualification: Klaus-Peter Hennig , Hein-Direck Neu and Dirk Wippermann . Detlef Thorith and Hartmut Losch
started for the GDR . Losch was eliminated in the qualification, Thorith reached the final and was sixth there.
Austria was represented by Heimo Reinitzer , who did not pass the qualification.
Athletes from Switzerland and Liechtenstein did not take part.

Conducting the competition
The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round on September 1st. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 59.00 m. Since more than twelve athletes exceeded this distance, there was no further filling of the final field.
In the final on September 2, each athlete initially had three attempts. The best eight participants were then given a further three attempts.

A three-way battle for the medals between the Czechoslovak Ludvík Daněk, European champion from 1971 , the US athlete Jay Silvester and the Swede Ricky Bruch was expected.
The Hungarian Géza Fejér took the lead with 62.50 m in the first attempt, but was overtaken by the US thrower John Powell in the second lap. reach the 62.82 m. In the third round, Silvester took the lead with 63.50 m, with Powell, Fejér, GDR throwers Detlef Thorith and Daněk behind him. In the fourth round Bruch worked his way up to third place behind Powell with 62.76 m and was able to improve on lap five with his best throw of 63.40 m to second place behind Silvester. Powell, Fejér and Daněk followed on the other places. In the last attempt Ludvík Daněk achieved his best distance. He threw the discus to 64.40 meters, thus securing the Olympic title after 1968 bronze and 1964 had won silver - time Olympic champion was in each case the American Al Oerter , record Olympic champion with four gold medals. Oerters Olympic record remained, Ludvík Daněk missed this distance by exactly 38 centimeters.
Ludvík Daněk became the first Czechoslovak Olympic champion in the discus throw .
Ricky Bruch managed to win the first Swedish medal in this discipline.
In all 17 Olympic finals so far there had been at least one US medal, including here. Out of 51 medals awarded so far in this discipline, Silvester won the 31st medal for the USA.
