Belgium participated in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal with a delegation of 101 athletes (75 men and 26 women) in 80 competitions in 16 sports. The most successful participant was the athlete Ivo Van Damme , who won the silver medal in the 800 and 1500 meters. Show jumper François Mathy won two bronze medals, in the individual and in the team. Furthermore, cyclist Marcel Vaarten won silver in the time trial and Karel Lismont bronze in the marathon. The youngest athlete was the swimmer Pierrette Michel , she was 14 years and 126 days old. The oldest participant was François "Frans" Lafortune, who was 43 years old and 227 days old. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the athlete Gaston Roelants , who did not take part in the competitions.
