Summary

Date: 23/24 September 2000

The actual favorite for this competition was the French world champion Eunice Barber, who, however, was unable to reach her high potential due to an injury. The 1996 Olympic champion Ghada Shouaa from Syria had the same problems . The favorite was the vice world champion of 1999 and 1997 Denise Lewis from Great Britain in this competition. At the same time she was also the reigning European champion . Other medal candidates were the German world champion from 1997 Sabine Braun, the Polish vice European champion Urszula Włodarczyk and the Belarusian European Championship third and World Cup fifth from 1997 Natallja Sasanowitsch.

In the first discipline, the 100-meter hurdles , Shouaa had to break off her run and did not start any of the other exercises. Barber, on the other hand, was the best and only hurdle sprinter in the field under thirteen seconds with 12.97 seconds, now leading Lewis with 39 points. The further distances were short. The US-American Shelia Burrell followed in third place in front of Włodarczyk and the Romanian Viorica Țigău.

Barber was also the best in the high jump with Sasanowitsch, the Russian Natalja Roschtschupkina and the Kazakh Irina Naumenko with a jump of 1.84 m. Barber was now 81 points ahead of Sasanowitsch, another 37 points behind followed Roschtschupkina in third place. Seven points behind the Russian, Braun was fourth, while Lewis temporarily dropped to eighth.

With 15.55 m, Lewis was the best shot putter in this all-around competition. Thanks to this performance, she moved back to second place and was now 30 points behind Sasanowitsch and 45 points ahead of Braun. Barber hit just 11.27 m and fell back to eighth.

Roschtschupkina was the fastest 200-meter runner . Her time of 23.53 s earned her second place in the overall standings, 31 points behind the leading Sasanowitsch. Lewis was now in third place, their gap to Sasanowitsch had grown to 51 points. Włodarczyk followed behind Lewis in fourth, while Russian Jelena Prochorowa advanced to fifth and was one point ahead of Braun.

The gaps after the first day were close, the decision on the distribution of the medals was still completely open. Eunice Barber, however, after a strong start in the first two disciplines, could no longer build on her best form, her injury made her too difficult to create.

Prokhorova was the best athlete in the first discipline of the second day of competition, the long jump . At 6.59 m she jumped nine centimeters further than Sasanovich and eleven centimeters further than Lewis. Prokhorowa improved to third behind Sasanowitsch, who led with 57 points in front of Lewis. Barber could not carry out her last two attempts due to her injury and broke off the competition.

After throwing the javelin , Lewis took the lead. She threw the spear at 50.19 m, only twelve centimeters shorter than the best javelin thrower in the field, the Cuban Magalys García. García and Lewis were the only athletes who managed to break the 50-meter mark. Lewis now led with 63 points ahead of Sasanowitsch. Prokhorowa was another 83 points back in third place.

The starting situation for the final 800-meter run was good for the leading Briton. Sasanowitsch had to be about four seconds faster than Lewis to change the order. Prokhorova, who is strong in this discipline, had to run out against Sasanowitsch for about six seconds to get past her.

Denise Lewis crossed the finish line almost half a second later than Sasanowitsch and was thus Olympic champion. Jelena Prokhorova was able to compensate for her deficit on Sasanowitsch and won the silver medal with four points ahead of Natallja Sasanowitsch. The fastest 800 meter runner was the Italian Gertrud Bacher in run two with 2: 09.08 min, for whom she was fourteen in the final ranking. Fourth place went to Urszula Włodarczyk ahead of Sabine Braun, Natalja Roschtschupkina and the German Karin Ertl.

Denise Lewis was the first British Olympic champion in the heptathlon .
