Otis is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 672 inhabitants in 299 households on an area of 74.02 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Otis has a total area of 74.02 km², of which 64.15 km² are land and 9.87 km² are water .
Geographical location
Otis is in northwest Hancock County and borders Penobscot County to the north . There are several lakes in the area of the town. The largest is Beach Hill Pond in the southeast, others are Floots Pond and Burnt Pond in the northwest. The surface is hilly, the highest point is the 178 m high Great Brook Hill .

history
Otis was settled from 1805. The area was organized as a town on March 19, 1835. The name Otis came from one of the landowners, Joseph Otis. Otis became the 227th town in Maine. The area was previously known as Township T8 or Township No. 8 East of Penobscot River, Livermore Survey (T8 EPR LS) . The area of today's town of Dedham also belonged to township T8.
Over the years there have been 8 sawmills in Otis, while Otis' heyday had 5 at the same time. These plants produced shingles and staves. There was also a tire maker who made tires for barrels and several shops. Otis was divided into 2 school districts and there were 3 schools. Today the Beach Hill School is located in Otis.

The Maine State Route 180 runs north to south through the eastern part of the Town. It connects Otis in the north with Eddington and in the south with Ellsworth.

The Otis School Department is responsible for school education in Otis. In Otis there is the Beach Hill School with school classes from pre-kindergarten to the 8th grade, which is also attended by school children from Mariaville.
